Swap Cobalt SS Steering Wheel??

Does anyone know if it would be easy to swap the regular steering wheel for one of those sweet Pontiac three spoke steering wheels??? They look 1000x better and would suit the look of the SS better, just pop out the pontiac logo and put in the chev! Anyone know how much a steering wheel w/ airbag costs?

Pontiac Torrent:

Cobalt SS:

In fact if anyone knows how to get the little chrome pieces on the vent levers that would look good too (not sure if its possible with rotating knobs tho)!

Here's the same wheel in the Chevy HHR with a Chev logo (Unfortunatly only in grey):

yeah im sure they used the same bolt pattern....so i dont see why it wouldnt be interchangeable. im sure that the HHR one would definitly fit. unless you are getting it from a junk yard expect to pay a chit load.

Yeah, agreed its gunna be pricy but it would be interesting to see how much I could get for the old steering wheel since in reality they both probably cost the same for GM. Maybe I'll just break into a torrent and make a swap!

It would be to much of a mess to switch the wheels since you would have to screw around with the air bag and all the wiring.

Steering wheels and airbags are qualified for each car line so you can't simply swap steering wheels and airbags and expect the airbag to work correctly. This would be dangerous for yourself and anyone who may buy the vehicle from you in the future.

Now the Cobalt just switched from a 4 spoke to a 3 spoke design for MY 2007. But it will still not work The pre 2007 Cobalt has the crash sensors tuned differently than the 2006 model year. The airbag performance is different.

I work for the airbag supplier on the 2007 Cobalt and this swap will not work correctly and you are only endagering yourself.

Um... guys... the Cobalt is getting that steering wheel for 2007. So it should be a direct swap.

It'll cost ya though.

Silver Streak,

Wrong, they are not a direct swap. 07 crash sensors are calibrated differently than the 06 and older. They will bolt up but that is about it.

These two system are not the same. I also believe the steering column is changed as well and the collapsable column performs differently than the the column with the 4 spoke wheel.

The crash testing that goes into these vehicles to get 5 star is critical to fine tuning. Any change to this system will cause your 5 star to drop to 2 or 3 star very quickly.

Rule of thumb is leave the system alone.

Um... okay... so, do you have credientials or something to back up your knowledge? Are you a designer, a tech, or just a know-it-all?

No disrespect meant, what you've said could very well be valid. I just wish to know where you got your data from.

That would make you the expert in this category!

Nice to have some folks on the board that really do know the answers.

Looks like he's right on this one guys... too bad though... that 2007 steering wheel looks sweet.

My involvement on this issue occured when I heard of people on this forum modifying there DAB emblems and changing steering wheels.

This is a no no with saftey related items on today's vehicles.

As safety engineers we do what we can to help save lives and it makes it very difficult to do that when people choose to modify there safety equipment.

Adding emblems or anything to the DAB cover is ill advised and potentially dangerous.

Just imagine the force required to inflate an airbag in 10-20 milliseconds. That is some serious output and force. Do not add things to your steering wheels or airbags. These object become bullets in a deployment.
