Wheel painting noob!!!
I know this might sound ridiculous but do you have to powder coat wheels or could you use car paint on them, I work at a body shop is why I'm asking because it would be way cheaper if I could paint them instead of powder coating them... ??Flame suit on??
Have any pics??? Thanks u prob just saved me 175 bucks I assume you can't do it to chrome?(I have 2 chrome winter wheels for the front lol) but I figured it would work on ss/tc wheels just wanted to check b4 I asked my painter
On the chrom wheels, you'll have to get rid of the chrome completely or it won't stick. It'll peel very easy no matter much preparation you do. Get them sand blasted or sand them to hell and back.
K maybe I'll just keep them chrome ones chrome then I don't have access to a sandblasted anymore lol
I'll just sand the hell out of the tc wheels lol

Could always do what I did for a temporary thing. I plasti dipped my whole rim (face and the back) and then painted over the plasti dip. You can't even tell the plastic coating is there. It even feels in pits, little scrapes and scratches. I like my wheels a ton and I did it this way. Like I said before, it's a temporary thing unless you wanna keep them like this. I'll probably just leave mine painted untill it chips or peels off.
Yeah PlastiDip is a good way in case you ever want to change easily. Maybe check that route out, I PlastiDipped my old wheels a few months ago, they held up through snow/giant puddles of water/gravel, anything
Wheel specific? I was just gonna take the tires off sand them hardcore paint 2 coats, clear with normal clear, bake them in the paint booth, let them sit, put the tires back on, drive away lol
Would i need to sand before the plastic dip? I thought plastic dip was flat black? I was looking for more of a metallic color, if I plastic dip then paint over it would I need to sand, would I be able to clear over the paint ? Would the paint just peel off eventually? Sorry about all the questions
No, absolutely not necessary to sand to PlastiDip, also the PlastiDip has enough texture that paint sticks to it perfectly fine. Yes, you can still clear coat over the paint, DipYourcar.com makes a Plasti Dip glossifier, but you can just use any clear coat, it's just harder to remove when you want to.
This is all just for a non-permanent solution. If you're dead set on a color, by all means sand and regular paint them.

dont plasti dip, and you dont have to sand the **** out of them haha. just get a rough surface, i started with like 600 grit then 800 then 1000 which i probably didnt even need. sanding all four took like 10 mins.

I'm torn between plastidipping or powdercoating my stock TC wheels. I want them black and want something that's durable and will last. Should I just spend the $300 and get the powdercoating done and over with?
Ok well I think what I will do is plastic dip them first if that top pic is just plastic dip with I assume some kind of gloss gloss over them, and if I don't like it I just say oh well and peel it off (sounds easy to do the way people always talk about it) and paint them for real, now just to find a thread on plastic dipping wheels so I know how many cans to get lol and where to get it from
