I stumbled across this today and it really got me thinking. I've been messaging around to try and see if I can't get some data on a shorter rear shock that would work for this application.

The benefits I see are: Ability to corner balance the car, additional tire-to-strut clearance so I can go down to 12mm front spacers and bump up to 255's in the front. Modifying the body to add a gland nut and while the body is open shims can be welded in for the insert more easily. Cost. Ability to swap spring rates relatively easily. HUGELY better damping than any of the off the shelf stuff. Camber adjustability at the hat. Ability to run high rear rates and make the car rotate without the use of a heavy sway bar.

I'm expecting this to cost more than currently available coilovers, but not as much as coilovers of similar quality. I'm expecting these to be a bit noisy, probably not as streetable as YYZ's but probably better than some of the lower rate stuff.

Again, a shorter rear shock will be necessary, but I'm confident I can find something for another platform that will work or can be modified to fit. These will be for autocross in STX, and I want to bring a gun to a gun fight at nationals... I don't think anything currently available will work at that level.

You need the "Randy" BC Custom coilovers. They are about $1500 and are shorter and customer valved. Randy Obrien, check him on facebook. Theres a bit of a ordering time because he does it himself from what ive read.

 

If I spec a custom coilover I'll just go directly to BC rather than paying a middle man. I've heard mixed things about BC as a company and have not been terribly impressed with them. I'm fairly positive I will be able to piece together a superior system for less than $1500. Thanks for the suggestion though, I have seen them I'm just not a supporter of the stance thing. I only plan on running the car 1-2" lower than stock, I probably would run the standard length Koni inserts in the front which are only about 250/pair.

 

BC isnt made for stance, people just use them because they have the best damping for the price. As far as tawain coilovers go their quality control is the best. The best coilovers I have found for the cobalt were made by ANZE, which can use your choice of Penske, JRZ, Ohlins, or Moton dual adjustable race dampers. It costs about 4-5k for a set but if you want the best you have to pay.

 

For about $1300 (no middle man pricing) you can do BC extreme low's with Stance springs, best ride and the lowest for the money for sure.

 

Oh man.. a set of Penskes would be dope. hahah. I spent waay too much time trying to figure out how to mod the NASCAR shocks I have laying around to work for the cobalt before I finally said eff it.

 

From my searching there aren't many options, the ones that look promising are pretty pricey. I'd like to find something with adjustable length (like what comes with coilovers ) But its been 2 years and lost interest.

 

Yeah, its an unfortunate reality. I found some YYZ v1 springs and I'll be playing with those and will probably wind up doing something similar to what you did in the rear as I start collecting cheap used springs to experiment with.
