If you don't ride a motorcycle, get a dedicated car helmet. If you have a motorcycle, then get a motorcycle helmet, full face. Don't get open face. Keep the visor down, if it's not too hot.
I happen to like the Bell helmets a whole lot. I have a pretty wide head, and they tend to fit me better. Try to go to somewhere that has some in stock, or order from a place that allows returns. Expect it to be tight for a while. 300-400 is probably average. Just remember it's your head. It's worth protecting. Usually.

Safe Racer is a good website to look for helmets. What ever you do make sure that you get a Snell 2005 rated helmet because that is what all the track days have as a standard for helmets this year and yes they look for the snell rating inside the helmet.

Snell 2010 if you want to run the last SCCA event I was at. I could be wrong though. Only knew what I was told when they refused the helmet that I brought.
Like others have said, it's really worth it to be able to try them on in person, especially if you have no idea what size you head is.
If this is your first event, you also might want to consider seeing if they will have loaner helmets, and use one of those. No point dropping the cash for your own helmet just to find out this isn't something you want to do on the regular.
I use this for drag racing. Snell 2010 and cheap. Bell Vortex Grind Helmet - $99.99 closeout special! In stock NOW! :: MSRP: $179.99
