Track Time at Pikes Peak Raceway

Pikes Peak raceway is getting back into the racing business.

First, the Richard Petty Driving Experience will begin operating there this month and will be a going business, with continuous driving, in the future. The track recently offered the SCCA autocross crowd the opportunity to work for (drive a stock car) the Richard Petty Driving Experience when it moves permanenty to the track next year.

Second, Pikes Peak is offering all day driving time on the 1.3 mile road course for $150 for the day. I haven't tried yet because my tires would go away too fast -- but I'm getting some harder rubber soon so we'll see. I think I'll look into a Kirk or IO Port bolt-in roll-cage before I really play hard on the track -- there are very serious concrete walls along the track. SCCA has a general comment about road racing and driving road courses: 'If you can't afford to ball it up and throw it away, then don't take it on a road course!'

Pikes Peak is a banked 1-mile, D-shaped oval race course with an infield section for a road course. The road course begins at the end of turn 4, goes along the D-shaped front straight, dives into turn 1, skips turn 2, goes back up on the rear straight, and then then turns into the infiels for the balance. When it was operating initially, it was the fastest 1-mile course in the US for both Indy car and the Busch series. The new owners are building a 2.5-mile road course outside the present track. They've also modified the parking lot to make a larger autocross area (which we use regularly).
