What SCCA class to run if I want to run other events?

I believe I want to run in the street touring class next year but I do have a few questions...

1) difference between STU and STX? I saw some answers on some Subaru forums but it was vague. Which would I fall into and which would I be most competitive in?

2) it seems that switchable tunes are illegal. Does this mean that I will need to run 2 ECU's so I can have my street/track one (will be trifecta tuned @ 20 or 21psi) or is it okay as long as the tune is disabled?

3) The short list of parts is: powell YYZ v.3, Powell XXX swaybar, Spherical CAB's (illegal???), SS brake lines/fluid replacement, Team Dynamics 17x8.5 or 17x9 wheels w/ some 255's (265's???, offset???), driver mod.

4) coming later: Koni yellows (custom valving?), race pads (different for auto-x and track??), harness bar/harnesses, powell under car bars.

Anything else? what order should I get these mods in?

I really want to Auto-x and also try out some time attack stuff and obviously HPDE's

Any help appreciated.

Thanks.

I think you'll find this chart helpful

Difference between STU and STX is simply the list of cars on each, generally faster cars are in STU and slightly slower cars are classed in STX. Check the 2013 SCCA solo rules for the lists. I'm pretty sure the SS/TC is in STX, well at least is was last year.

You cant run modified boost pressure, or spherical control arm bushings in the Street Touring (ST) classes. There is also a specified maximum tire width you are allowed to run to STX for FWD cars, check this in the rules.

Hmm...

I'm torn because on one hand I want to be as fast as possible and just run the fastest RAW time possible but on the other I want to actually be competitive.

I was told that I was in STU - I will have to double check. The car is a SS/TC if that makes a difference.

That chart is the **** - I just read all the ST rules in the official book, a slightly dry read but to the point.

I hate that my intercooler and downpipe are illegal. I figure I will just run them and keep quiet until someone bitches or if I make it to natl event or something.

Competitive? Yes. I'm running street tires, so I'm no threat to beat Foximus ever, but even with street times the car runs higher 3rd of the class.

Just.... not with me behind the wheel, lol.

haha I feel ya man. I let my buddy who runs pro class in a ESP Cavalier run faster than my first 4 attempts in the rain in my car last event. Made me feel like I was reallll slow. The video is actually at the top of this forum subcategory.

My last time out I had someone co-run my car. He beat me by 3 seconds.

Highfive!

Do people give you funny looks because they don't see why on earth someone bothered to mod a Cobalt to that level? Because I get those.

Granted they are some of the same people trying to force me into Ladies classes to "run with the other chickas"... So

Yeah my biggest competition at the last event (in novice) was actually my friends mom in their GXP Solstice (she also refuses to run ladies). Once we got within a few 10ths of each other she really turned up the wick and ended up eating some cones but she was really hauling ass!

I've always thought that the "ladies" class in the SCCA was insulting. Why a ladies class? I think the SCCA needs to wake up and evolve from its 1950's mentality.

The best I can come up with, is so that the husband/wife teams who share a car can't be taking up 2 place positions in a class, so that more people (read:guys) have a chance at placing. Even though the same thing can happen when two guys co-drive a car.

I'm sure at one point it very much was "Come and race against fellow women without the pressure of racing against men." but uh, time to move on now.

I'm in STC class in my base. It's got Koni's and YYZ springs as well as a Powell hardcore rear swaybar. If only I actually had a good set of tires...

Annoyingly it's a TWM STS and K&N intake that pushed me into that class (even before the suspension was on).

It's hard to tell someone they need to be running ladies class when they win regularly. There has been discussion in our area of getting rid of that. Not that it matters, it's never used.

Nobody bothers me about my car. Foximus wins often enough with his Cobalt that I don't get "why a Cobalt" but rather "oh, crap, and it's the turbo one at that."

SMF... "Son of a Mother Fu***** " class.

haha. at least when it comes to tire prices X.x

Id highly suggest stainless brake lines and better brake fluid as an early mod. It will make a world of difference.

My roommate is a girl and drives in the regular STS class, and is winning. Hell she said it was more fun to kick the boy's butts than to whoop up on the other girls. hahaha

Now I want to see more SMF cobalts....

Sheesh I need a few promotions before I'll be playing the hoosier game.

I was thinking about doing the brake lines. I just recently changed my rear pads and didn't open the bleeder when I compressed the cylinder (iknowiknow) and now there is all kinds of sh*t in the reservoir so I am thinking fluid and lines will be going on with the front pads (along with the 15hp red brembo mod lolol)

Foximus, do you have any videos of your car? I'm sure its very fast, I would just like to see a comparison of our platform on slicks.

Thanks!

I think he posted some on FB. I'll look if he doesn't answer first. I've co-ridden with him at our last event. It's crazy how well his car turns and stops. It's more than just the Hoosiers though. He's done a whole lot of work with suspension and whatnot to make that car stick.

It's Frankenstein. I'll let him tell you. It's his car. All I know is it took him a lot of time and works really well.

I avoided the purple crack (Hoosiers) Im on Hankook slicks. XD Cheaper, and i love the grip levels, and they last. I run 225/45/15's casue i got a set of Kosai K1 wheels cheap, and 15's are cheaper tires than the 17's I daily on.

As for whats done to the car? Its almost a what not. I need to actually think about everything thats on it. But I will say this. the "collective" would most likely say that theres no way the car is as good as it runs the way its set up. Sometimes you have to defy what everyone is saying and just try something.

Here's me looping it at Darlington with Sox-Fan in the car ( I had already won class, so why not try something):

Darlington In Car:

And here's Cherry point Marine Corp Base, before the V2.0 of the suspension went on:

Damn that car is moving.

I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that there is some substantial work done to the twist beam on that car - holy rotation!

I want to get the Powell XXX bar (maybe) and I wonder how that would compare to whatever your setup is?

Also that course is SOO much faster than what we have to work with in the Chattanooga region.

I love what the class stands for - allowing creativity - but it would be tough for me to go all out in a car that isn't paid off yet :-/ Bitchin setup though and if you have any suggestions beyond just the brakes first then let me know!!!

I can't say I do much whooping at AutoX, but I do know I can catch and pass cars at track days that I probably shouldn't be able to. I just do AutoX for fun, my passion lies more with track days.

I know of myself and 3 other Deltas who all run in SMF. Three of us all got together a few weeks ago to run at the same event, the only 3 cars in SMF.

Me: Some rando guy walked up and asked to ride along, so he could see the track some more before his runs. Dunno, at least he didn't act like he was terrified of my driving.

Derek: Does a whole lot more AutoX than me.

Kendall: Also does a whole lot more AutoX than me. He was first out of the 3 of us.

No pics of the fourth one I know of AutoX'ing, but if he ever gets around to it, he would be SMF too. He's also more of a track day person.

I really want to get on track soon, maybe even before I get wheels/tires... I have a lot of family up in Chicago - What track do you typically run up there? Road America? I'm looking at running VIR soon because it is relatively close, I would do Road Atlanta as it is closer but there is not a lot of run off and it looks a bit intimidating for a first timer.
