I'll bet its a imperial blue SS/TC with roughly 60k that has a trifecta tune on it that he does not know about

That mileage sounds terrible. Mine actually started getting better as it got colder. I don't know if it's cause I'm boosting less and cruising less and just sticking to highways. I'm getting roughly 9 to 10L/100kms. 7 or 8 instant on the highway. Hitting boost often will ruin your fuel mileage.

Your mileage should get worse with cold weather if you are driving the same.

But what clueless said is kind of true. Performance cars tend to "lug" it around less in winter conditions.

I think to a certain point the cold might help out the efficiency of the turbo system. Lower intake temps are always a good thing. But -30 and temperature like that would probably lower your mileage. Also idle time throws any gains you might see out the window.

I just did a oil change and threw in mobil 1 5w20 fully synthetic. just wondering if this is average mileage in our cold winters. i can see the gas gauge move lol.
I average between 5-10L/100km ~ 14.9 is crazy rich!

hopefully it's an easy fix.

Welcome, and (Christmas) greetings from a 'displaced Manitoban''!! :lol

I generally stick to "instant" fuel economy over the average, as idle time ect will skew the average...

Nawp.

Cold air molecules are closer together, thus more air into the combustion chamber, thus more fuel being burned.

why...Because

I don't understand. Then why have a intercooler? I was under the impression that the cooler the air the more air you can put into the combustion chamber and less fuel would be needed.

you've got it backwards;

oxygen (a component of air) + fuel = optimised combustion

when the air is heated (abient or mechanically) you have a lower oxygen content, the O2 sensor sees cooler combustion temps which indicate too rich a condition, and it then pull fuel out... conversely when the air is cooled, you can add more fuel and in turn make more power.

colder air = high oxygen content per volume = more power potential.

Yeah Its imperial blue with 75km lol.bought it from auto west. Never knew it was trifecta tuned! That saves me some cash. Was it taken care of? Or ripped on constantly with no maintenance. Would the tune throw my gas mileage off you think in the winter? Also my name is myles. I live right across from smittys on portage. Had a 1992 mr2 turbo before. Then had a kid so it had to go.

I knew the owner of the car you purchased well, Most of the KM's are highway. It was maintained well...wasnt really ever beat on. Not sure if they sold it with the tune or not, but i don't recall taking it off the car before it was traded in

Don't think it has LSD. How are you driving it right now? Those stock tires are horrid in the snow.

Apparently the tune was on it when he traded it in. So you should have about 22 psi under max WOT.

Very carefully...lol those nitto neo gens, become rocks when its cold. Do you know what 22 psi is in kpa? Ill take a look when I get back in town from work, if the tune is on it still. I think I hit 140kpa when I got some traction in third, going wot. Not to sure though

The owner of that car has a set of winter tires, good ones. Michelin alpine pa3. Think he used them 1 or two winters. probably let them go for 650.

I thought I could make it without winter tires. That ended pretty quick. With an 18 inch rim you almost need winter tires. Even all seasons on that diameter are useless.

you can get studdable tires from Goodyear chains right now;
I got a set less than a month ago for $140/tire, less tax, and studding.
expext to pay about $100 for mounting & balancing... just an fyi.

Didn't the owner of that car write it off while drunk driving and have to fix it with cash because be was not insured due to the DUI?
-fuel economy is best on the Lnf between +15 and -10 from what I have noticed. It's also the most powerful feeling. 16mpg is pitiful no matter what the temp. It's possible the tune is in no way set up for the cold weather perhaps that could be looked at since it alread has a tune? A summer tune on the rich side could equal super bad gas mileage when the air gets dense and the afr wants to keep it rich as hell...
Colder air may encourage the engine to use more fuel but to an extent it's also more efficent so you don't need to rev as much to make the same power. Ie you can get better gas mileage in colder temps. At some point the cold becomes inefient. Plus winter fuels get thinned out with antifreeze as well as people have. Tendency of letting there car warm up for too long which all kills fuel economy.

Summer tires are god awefull especially in a wide low profile. Winter Tires are a must not a recommendation.

Jordan the guy you are refurring to is melis with the mr2 I think? The guy I work with?
