remember the cop has to PROVE that you were speeding to the judge. no rader detect, so how does he know you we're speeding. i would think if i was off duty, i would call one of my local buddies who is on duty to track you down.

hahaha yea it was quite funny to me too, having my mom call me up all confused about why there was a cop calling her asking about me, saying he wanted to "talk" about my driving.. and then telling me he could give me a ticket for tint, this is pretty much how that went:

"I saw that you had tint as well, I COULD issue you a ticket for that"

me: "i dont have tint"

"well i saw maybe a light tint.."

as i point over to my car and say "LOOK, no tint"

then he shuts up.. and starts talking about issuing me a ticket for having a different address on my license than my registration (my parents are divorced, and i used to live with my mom.. i guess i really should get my license changed over)

im still laughing over it

Guys cops don't always have to have a RADAR to prove you were speeding. Up until the 80's cops didn't have radar and could "pace" your car and that will hold up in court. Chances are thats what he did therefore it WILL hold up in court.

Plus seeing as you WERE SPEEDING then your 100% at fault for this, and shouldn't be bitching about getting caught for something YOU did wrong. This is what I see a lot of on here, "**** this cop" when in reality he was doing his job and caught you, so now your pissed that you got caught.

P.s. a cop that is "off duty" still has 90% of the rights he has when hes on duty, therefore your ticket is legit. So take it like a man and pay the thing instead of bitch about it, because you were speeding and now your trying to get out of it even though you were doing it.

Also he's not wasting any time in court, officers have assigned court dates, so to him he's still getting paid to sit around. No sweat off his back. Have fun paying your fine

thats easy for you to say.. until it happens to you, and then you will be bitching and whining just as much as i am, EVERYONE speeds, maybe not all the time.. i dont speed that much, and as far as im concerned i wasnt even doing 90! maybe around 80.. but you see people speed everyday.. and i can tell you right now alot of people would be complaining if cops just showed up at thier door to give them a ticket for speeding earlier that day.. especially when the cop was off duty in his civilian vechicle

the cop was even shaking when he wrote me the ticket.. it was a younger cop.. he mustve been newly recruited, nervous.. something

I meet him outside, ask what the problem is.. he tells me that he "saw" me speeding on 170th a couple hours prior, and then begins writing me a ticket.. he tells me that he couldve given me a tint ticket as well.. so my question is.. can cops do this??? dont they have to pull you over to issue you a speeding ticket? the cop claimed that he had up to 6 months after "seeing" me speed to issue the ticket..
That is not legal. I almost think this story is way off. Anyways, I'll try to beleive you. He needs some type of way of prooving how fast you were going. Fight that to the end. BTW, cops off duty can not give tickets. This has to be one of the most obsered things I have ever heard. I sure hope you did not admit to breaking the speed limit. Deny it to the end.

Um...NO HE CAN"T DO THAT! Did he pace you? get you on radar? or did he just "know" you were speeding? Now if I were you I would NEVER have signed that ticket! I would have demanded he call his supervisor down there to explain how he can hope to proove in court you were speeding with no PROOF!

Go to court and watch how far this gets thrown out!

It is no longer in the 80s. Seeing what some of you people post makes me lol. I went to law school and I'm telling you right now that was not a legal traffic stop. He could not even prove who was driving. Once your out of your car its to late.

Jake is 100% correct. I would not of even signed anything. I would of told him to get the hell of my property. Cops off duty cant just walk up to your house and write a ticket.

It is 100% true, i thought it was a joke myself, when he came to my house at 11pm at night and started writing me a ticket, i was in such disbelief.. but i didnt admit to anything, and i didnt sign anything.. i will be signing the "plead not guilty" bit on the back of the ticket, and sending it to the court address.. but no i really dont see how it would stand, when all he did was "guestimate" while driving in his own car, and again with the tint thing, he thought i had tint on my car, when my car is completely clear.. just gives me reasonable doubt to him knowing how fast i was going

No way that will hold up in court Not in his personal Vehicle! He has many rights off duty but the calibration on speedo will easily repute that ticket. MY lawyer would have a hayday if that happened!!!! and i send them the bill for her as well!

A lot of it is Quota most cops have to write a certain amount of tickets a month or week they will do anything to meet them!

I have lots of friends in law enforcement and don't think they don't speed as well. and as for 100% at fault, That maybe true but thats not the point! The point is the officer had no right to go so far!

well, in this instance, if you go to court and fight it, whats pretty much gonna happen is that the judge will look at ur record and if you have no speeding tickets, it will prb get dropped or PBJ (probation before judgment=no pts). but if you have points or a speeding ticket, she will make you pay the fine and court costs.....so its up to you.

Off duty cops can not write tickets, they are citizens, not cops at that point!

I agree the judge will look at his driving record But, that tickets gonna be easy to get out of if done properly! If he has any tickets he might want to talk to a lawyer just to cover bases They know exactly what to say and when to say it! Keeping points off you liscence is more important than the cost of getting them removed IN ALL CASES! I've had 6 tickets ammended in 4 years, She's great! mine charges $150 and she takes care of everyhing No need for me to even attend court!

tell him youd like to file a lawsuit against him for showing up to your house in inapproperiate attire, say he was wearing a see-thru speedo. that holds about as much ground as his "seeing you speeding" lol

Besides it could have been your "buddy" taking your car for a test drive and you had no idea he was speeding.

I have no idea about where you live but here in Maryland if the police catch you speeding they have to stop you then and there to wright you the ticket. IF they lose site of the car for any amount of time then the ticket will be thrown out of court.
