By pure luck actually. A friend of mine asked me to go to a gig with him, and I was hooked. This was 12 years ago now. I can not even COUNT how many weddings, christmas parties, school dances, and clubs that I have deejayed at.

Well contrary to popular belief, being a DJ is not simply pressing play on the CD player.
You have to know your music, and a lot of it. You can't be a great DJ by knowing only Rock music, or only Country. You can on the radio....but not in the mobile DJ buisness. You have to be able to "read" your dancefloor and your crowd and keep them dancing. I am sure you have been to a wedding where a DJ plays **** music and nobody dances. That is because he/she does not know how to "read" a crowd. This is one thing that I excelled at was being able to read my crowd and dance floor and be able to pick up on what they liked and play the music that would get them dancing.
You have to have a lot of music, and a large variety of it. Reason for this is that not every crowd is the same and you have to be able to cater to what they want to hear and dance too.
You have to be a great on the microphone and be a great people person. The best part of any gig for me was when I would have to do games for prizes, or when doing the bouquet toss/garter removal at a wedding. I would always add my own special twist to the games to make it that much more fun. You have to be outgoing and fun and be able to get along with the crazy drunk uncle to make everyone happy.
Gigs can be awesome, and then there are some that are just plain ****. Sometimes you get a group of people who dance from song one until the very last song. Other gigs you get people who do not want to dance at all and just want to socialize with everyone. Either way, you have to play music and keep them happy. Even if they are not dancing, they can still hear the music.
This is just scratching the surface with deejaying, but I do not regret one minute of it. I am not doing nearly as many gigs as I used too....but if I am payed the right amount of $$$, I could be convinced to do a gig or two.
