Catalytic Converter Required In Alberta?

I have heard that it isnt manditory to have a Catalytic Converter in alberta, but then ive also heard that its not aloud to be removed from a car that had it installed from factory.

Can anyone shed some light onto this? Trying to figure this out before I get a turbo kit and an exhaust.

I don't want to tell you information that isn't correct, but the last car I removed the cat from, I asked my mechanic who SHOULD know the laws, and he told me in Alberta it does not matter, as long as it doesn't violate the noise bylaws, you are good to go.

If you try to register your car in any other province or state that requires a cat (usually CARB in the US), you will fail the sniffer and will need to put a cat on, thus illegal in said places.

Yep, no cat is fine. Exhaust noise is a different story though. Running a high flow cat on mine and it's not overly loud with a 3" turboback - No tickets.

needs to pass a "visual" - in which case the mech can be an a$s and try to hassle you - but in the end we do not have emissions here so the cusp of why cat's are installed becomes null-n-void... hence the grey area your seeing.

Bad mechanic then, nothing in the tsa even about cats.

Mufflers

61(1) A motor vehicle propelled by an internal combustion engine must have an exhaust muffler that is cooling and expelling the exhaust gases from the engine without excessive noise and without producing flames or sparks.

(2) A person shall not drive or operate a motor vehicle propelled by an internal combustion engine if the exhaust outlet of the muffler has been widened.

(3) A person shall not drive or operate a motor vehicle propelled by an internal combustion engine if a device is attached to the exhaust system or the muffler that increases the noise made by the expulsion of gases from the engine or allows a flame to be ignited from the exhaust system.

(4) This section applies to a power bicycle that is propelled by an internal combustion engine.

Wait, can't produce flames? So being stock and being able to shoot a flame with NLS / downshifting into high rpm illegal?

Bringing another TC to GP? There's only about 4-5 of us here. I'm the stock black 2010 with gold TC rims. The silver one with tint, tinted tails, black tc rims and debadged is on here too.

I just got a resinated test pipe to remove the cat on my evo. Since its still factory dp and exhaust it sounds and feels normal. Although my CEL just came on.

Not that bad driving here at stock height. I've only scrapped a couple ramps but my lip is fine. For main roads the only really bad pot hole is the one in the left lane heading south on the bypass coming around the college. When Gord Graydon was our mayor he didn't spend anything on road construction or maintenance so that's why the majority of it is garbage but there's a ton of repairing going on now.
