Edmonton Lightning Storm
very nice indeed. I've yet to have a night good enough to try this. Like you said, the fact that there was NO WIND really helps! Usually with a storm this crazy theres so much wind the tri-pod shakes and it doesnt work.
Damn, where in Edmonton do you live? Do you live off a big field or something? Here in Sherwood Park it was pretty nuts at exactly 4am...really bright but nothing too close.
The pictures are epic. They look awesome.

That's ridiculous how many strikes there were in one picture like 6! ****!
I was out of town an hour and a half near Camrose at a cabin with a bunch of friends. It was like 6am and lightning struck really really freaking close to the cabin. It was so ******* loud, I honestly thought a house exploded!

I live on lac ste anne, by alberta beach about 45 minutes west of edmonton. lol. that looking across the lake form the fornt deck
Nice pictures!! Can I ask what your settings were for the fireworks? (Both of you lol)
Fireworks are at the lake this coming weekend and I'm hoping to get in some shots.
Also IMO I think (crusin) your second to last lightning picture would look wayyy awesomer if you cut the top "light area" out, and had dark/lightning/dark
(A little cropping works wonders!)

And, for the lightning only going from the cloud to ground or ground to cloud, the answer is it goes both ways. It even travels from cloud to cloud, or cloud to air. It just depends on the charge of the air, ground, and the cloud. (I have an equivalent to an Atmospheric Science Minor, short a few credits). I too am a photographer, and lightning is one of my favorite subjects, we just havent had crap for weather here in ND this year.
Dude that looks really good. I've wanted to get some really good lightning shots for a long time. Too bad I was in BC! The storm on Saturday (the 1st) was absolutely wicked though. A hell of a lot of damage.
Here's a few of mine, they are crappy facebook compressions but they are so-so. I don't have the full versions handy... I usually use a window mount to take pics, that way you don't need to be standing out in the open with a big metal stick...
