advanced driving at AMP track NS

the Atlantic BMW club (in Halifax) arranges two advanced driving schools at Atlantic Motorsport Park (AMP) in June and August and each lasts for a weekend, about 6-7 hours on Saturday and same on Sunday starting at 8 30 and mostly track driving (on and off track learning). I went last summer and it was a blast.. I had the only Cobalt there and thought it would be great if there are at least 2 or 3 Cobalts so I decided to post here. It isn't cheap tho.. $450 for the event and about $50 for club membership if you're not one and they require an inspection from a prof mechanic within a month before the weekend. A friend said he can reserve a number of spots if I can let him know by mid December. Anyone in??

i wont be interested in that but im driving back from Edmonton in July for summer vacation and will hit up the track if theres any track days during the summer. Where exactly is the track, greenfield? How is the track layout and how well is it maintained? Our local track is maintained really well but its quite small since its ment for go-karts (1.5 miles) The track in calgary was long and nice but the thing was horrible to drive on, pavement was cracked and some pot holes.

this track is short too. it's about 1.5 miles long. I don't have a lot of experience since this was the first track I've driven on so I don't know if it's good, bad or average but I liked it and it was well maintained. It's closer to Halifax.. in Shubenacadie about 30 mins north of Halifax. here's an image of the track showing the layout: http://atlanticmotorsportpark.com/im...k-Overhead.jpg
not sure about track days yet tho

I have been there many times. Pretty decent track, couple of slow turns and kinky down up hill turns will kill an FWD car but heck DO IT!!

If i get the time to hit up this track it will be with my EvoX...AWD FTW!! I should have all my bolt ons + meth + tune....im not sure if ill have my coilovers though, depends how long im in afghanistan for.

As for that track. looks pretty good. Turn 2 looks the worse...no so much how sharp it is but the entry point is narrow, would be interesting to get a good apex there. Is that a stream or something between 6 and 7 (on the back stretch)?

the Cobalt didn't do that bad actually.. I was able to hang with a new WRX, an '08-'09 Cayenne S and a '10 335xi and I had winter tires on.. I know they're no problem for a GMS1 turbo SS in a straight lines but can't really take full advantage of that on such a short track, especially with winter tires

yea, i can't blame you. I went with hankook winters that came with the car (couldn't afford better tires at the time) and they were really bad. looking forward to having better tires this time. if you change your mind, let me know!

Check out the Atlantic Region motorsports club forums. ATLANTIC REGION MOTOR SPORTS :: Index

Each year they hold a High Performance Driving School, which you need to take to acquire a license to go on the track.

Here is a rundown from last year:

igh Performance Driving School - May 20-21, 2011

The first ASCC High Performance Driving School of 2011 will be held during the long weekend on May 20th and 21st, 2011. This session is open to anyone who wants to learn some of the more advanced techniques and track safety to qualify for a Lapping card or SoloSprint license for the 2011 season. Remember that you REQUIRE one of these licenses to drive at AMP outside of school or Slalom events!

The High Performance Driving School will take place starting with a evening classsroom session at 6:30pm Friday May 20th at 100 Dispensing Way, Lower Sackville followed by an all day track session at Atlantic Motorsport Park on Saturday May 21st. Entry fee is $200.00 which includes the Lapping card and/or Solosprint license for students who successfully complete the school. This course consists of a classroom session instructing students on the theory and physics of high performance driving as well as track safety and the following day consists entirely of on-track activities with small groups of students paired to experienced instructors.

The HPDS Students are required to bring the following:

- A safe street vehicle. If your vehicle can pass MVI its probably fine for the on-track sessions. Vehicles will be inspected for suitability (Brakes, Tires, etc) prior to the session. Convertible vehicles are NOT permitted without adequate rollover protection, most factory rollover protection is not enough so please check with the organizers. Please contact the organizers with questions regarding vehicle suitability. Students will be asked to complete a self-inspection checklist provided prior to the course.

- A Snell 2000M or newer 'M' rated helmet is acceptable, provided the car is not equipped with a roll cage or racing slicks. Cars with cages and/or slicks will require a Snell 'SA' rated helmet. Helmets meeting the following FIA standards are also approved.

FIA 8860-2004
Snell 2000 SA / 2005 SA / 2010 SA
SFI Foundation 31.1A or 31.2A
British Standards Institution BS 6658-85 type A/FR

If you do not have access to a helmet please contact the organizers as loaner helmets may be arranged with advance notice.

Below are the forums and rules you need to read, understand and fill out for this school:

SoloSport Self Tech Form must be filled out and completed.

Information regarding rollover bars (please inform us if you plan to use a convertible for the school, most convertibles do not meet our safety requirements) http://asncanada.com/ASN_Solosport/A...D_RollCage.pdf

A helmet for the school is required. If you do not have an acceptable helmet please inform us ASAP.

A Snell 2000M (expiry date: December 31, 2011) or 2005M rated helmet is also acceptable for use in all classes except Modified and provided the car is not equipped with a roll cage.

For the school a fire extinguisher is not required.

Any questions please email hpds (at) ascc.ca

Completion of this High Performance Driving School qualifies participants for an ARMS Lapping and SoloSprint license allowing you access to the many lapping and solo competition sessions at Atlantic Motorsport Park throughout the year. The cost of this license is included in your school entry.

Note: Preferential placement will be given to students interested in obtaining their SoloSprint qualifications for the purposes of running the 2011 ARMS SoloSprint series held at AMP! Students interested only in obtaining the qualifications to attend lapping sessions may be asked to complete an AFRA Lapping School, held at another date.
