cobalts weren't built to last on a good day, nevermind take the beating a canadian winter would give it. that and i'd like to keep the mileage down. also winter rims and tires that will fit over the brembos cost just as much as a POS winter car.. lol

Running into the same problem lol. I would like to find winter rims/tires for the Balt but I can find a winter beater for cheaper at this point.

trucks are dicey. with little weight in the back they like to slide around. i do mostly highway driving to work and drive through a snow belt so a good stable car would be preferable. that and it'd be better on gas.

There's usually a few decently reliable ones floating around down shore. I'll ask around. I do believe jimmy armstrong (armstrongs auto sales, by the windsor off ramp) has.. Or had. (Haven't looked in a while) a 98? Or 99 acura el. I think he wanted something like 1800 for it. He usually has a few older cars floating around for cheapish. Could always check him out.

I just drive mine in the winter, undercoat and wax right before the snow starts. They were ment to driven all year round, they are fwd for god sakes! I'm already planning on buffing mine come spring to get out any imperfections caused by winter.

This will be the first winter lowered though, but I'm not too worried.

Id say get a set of ss/na wheels and winter tires. Trust me on this one, when you go to sell it most people could care less that it was winter driven or not and if you trade it in, dealers dont care. There was a set of ss/na wheels and winter tires for like 600. That way better that a $2k beater plus more reliable. My tc was the best car i have ever driven in the winter. Lsd plus traction control=huge win! Get that bitch undercoated really good and drive it!

It is impressive the amount of snow you can go through with a cobalt with good winter tires.

I drove through plenty a snowstorms last winter in my balt, had only one incident where the back end came out on me and I bumped a snowback because I was breaking downhill on ice haha. No damage though.

not worried about snow tires and rims... moreso mileage, new brakes and wear and tear. also salt stains in a black interior.. it's already undercoated

Nathan drove his the last few months of winter after he bought it on the summers it came with no problem. Never got stuck, even in that nice ice storm we had; he even went to the mall parking lot to play with it a bit later that day lol. I hear you about the salt staining it though. Good floor mats, and salt eraser are your friend for that.

nathan must have regular performance summer tires and not ultra high performance summer tires then. i got caught in 2 cm of snow once.. a light dusting... i got stuck on magazine hill...could have sat there and spun all day..

never again would i attempt to drive this in the snow again.. not to mention all the salt remover in the world would save the underpadding and rust that will form on everything from the seat brackets to the floor..

i'm very particular about my car and it will never see salt if i have my way. you can rustproof alot but there are always nooks and crannies it will find it's way into.

I tried to drive my G5 once I got as far as pulling it out of my garage into my turn around then tried to pull forward and that was the end of that. No traction control or lsd. Ended up pushing it back into my garage with my dad and that was the end of that never saw snow again. Have a 98 cavalier but the rust under it is so bad brake lines are braking and the frame is gone so im looking for something else.

Check at some dealer around your area sometime you can deal and have a good price. Buying a winter beater is a great idea! This way you can kept your balt clean!Save on tire and inssurance Salt is the badest thing for our car.It damaged paint and it cause the car to rust. I lived in rural area so there is always snow in the road. One time i opened the road with my car i was feeling the snow under my car (a dodge neon 2000-my first car). I wasn't afraid to crash it and that's what i liked about winter beater, when there is a snow storm, your not afraid to take the road cause you don't care about your car!
