Just did the same process to my SC rims. It was quite a bit of work. I used Circa 1850 Paint stripper I got from Home Hardware. This brought it down to black paint. The black paint I took off with a wire brush on a angle grinder, the wire brush I chose was quite soft to prevent any deep scoring on the aluminum. After all the paint was off the rims I used 80 grit sand paper to remove curb rash and 120 grit to take out the minor swirl marks left from the wire brush.
I worked my way up to 600 grit to make sure the surface was free of any visible imperfections.
I'm still waiting to paint them. Just need to get some money together. The move to ontario was expensive. Not to mention my car is at the body shop for the next 4 days. I got a Lancer as a rental.
