1989 Ford Tuarus SHO wants some, What do you think?

Here's the set up, He only wants to race for money of course! Car is a tierd old clunker with a wonderfull black krylon touch. ++ 89 yamaha SHO Motor with larger throttlebody, injectors in the 40 lbs range acording to him plus a port polished intake and 3" dual outlet exhuast!!! ( sounds great... not ) Not sure if he is sporting anything else but the car doesn't sound real healty so I would have to say he's going down Vs. my SS/SC even with the burnt clutch LOL.

Just wondering what these SHO's Old and New are capable of? What kind of money would you put on this?

Race is set up for Tuesday night at Dragway 42 weather permitting, I am only planning on making one or two runs to save damaging the clutch i won't be winding 1rst out all the way and easing into 2nd to save from slipping this method has proven to put a low 14 time down without beating on the car off the line.

I will post results but would like to hear any input cuase I could raise the stakes alittle yet!

Edit #1 No nitrous, no turbo, 5spd tuarus, plus lots of rust, no joke!!! I'll add anything else i find out later.

Yamaha motor in SHO = Best performance motor for the SHO.

I won't count it out. They are mid range torque and hp monsters. If it's an auto then you will be fine, it's the sticks you have to worry about.

If it's a dog like it sounds to be you shouldn't have a problem. The best stockish SHO i've seen that was in pristine condition run at HRP was a 14.8 @ 89mph. They have good mid-high range power so watch out.

On a side note I love those cars...not sure why lol.

I did that last time to try something new and thats when the clutch bit it, sort of! I can get the car to a 14.1 or 14.2 pretty easy mid 13s when i get the new clutch....When I get some money.

Thats the main reason I ask, I usually don't mind throwing money away to see what a car has got but I am really broke and a lose here could mean no lunch for a day or two!!!

Are you sure this SHO isn't just for show. What I mean is.....maybe it is a beast in a beater skin! (Can you say sleeper). I had a buddy growing up who had the biggest POS (looking) 69 GTO, (tilt front end....frt fenders flapped in the wind, 3 different colors of primer) I believe he got beaten only a few times. He made alot of money off that car! Watch your ass!

my advice if you dont have many mods.... save your lunch

SHO start off with more horsepower than we do to start and since he has upgrades dont raise the stakes....

i dont care what it looks like or what it sounds like.... or even if he seemed like a bad driver...

all these things can be portrayed to earn money...

good luck though

let us know how it works out

only sho u have to worry about is if they put a supercharger on the 5 speed six cyl, the newer sho's suck. they are heavier and ford made the engine using a yamaha design and with 2 more cylinders made only 10 more horses and the newer ones only came in auto. those late 80's sho's were cool, especially having their engine actually made by yamaha, but you will win no problem, they were amazing for their time, but that was 20 years ago... i kinda like them anyway cause they are ugly and quick.

All Good Advice just want to add this guy ain't sandbagging. Car has 120,000+ original the port and polishj job he is bragging about was a home done job ( might not have helped any..)
I am sure there are plenty of really nice SHO's out there but this I think is an ignorant hillbillie kid in a small town of junk ricers who thinks his car is bad ass till the real cars hit the streets then he's nowhere to be found.

I'll see if he wants to race my buddies 91 mustang for fun, if he takes that I will worry alittle but I can lay waste to the 5.0 easy. by like 5-6 car lengths in a 1/4.

Lol I love how people think they can just buy a dremel and are a porting wizard. He probably actually hurt performance. If thats all he has for mods you'll smoke him.
Go win some money

with you're mods/track times you have nothing to worry about, unless he has some hidden nitrous system or something. those sho's brand new and stock are low 15 second cars, if he is some amazing driver and all the mods he has done were done right and actually gave him any power(which i doubt the 3" exhaust helped anything and the factory manifold is an individual tuned runner type that uses longer smaller diameter tubes for lower rpms and at a certian rpm uses shorter larger diameter pipes for high prms for better flow when velocity is already high, it being tuned to give the best performance stock, his porting didnt help i bet) he will be running a 14.5 tops! which i doubt he is running. race him for money, miss 2nd gear and still take him by multiple lenghts. and buy yourself something pretty.

Brian, dude you have a busted ass clutch. I know your car runs a high13, low 14 but that was on a good clutch. You've told me yourself that the clutch slips at more than half throttle. Granted I think your car could take him (new clutch installed) but it'd be a waste of time and possibly more damage to your clutch as is to do it. Unless you are 100% you will win and are looking at $100 or so in winning. If it's a bet on $50 or less don't waste the time, until your car is running good again.

He has a video camera mount in the car but that is so there is proff that he toke a car!!! but I am going to postpone the race till I have a clutch, He is suposivly rebuilding the motor this winter and I am saving for a clutch so we have agreed to hold off till spring to make it more interesting, the bet ramains 20 between me and him and an additional 20 between him and a friend of mine! I need the car for daily driving so I'm not going to risk toasting the clutch just yet! I did Get my 88 Camaro running 330 hp 350ho with vortex heads, headers, custom exhuast, hypertech chip, Holley TB, and some other sh*t! Maybe just take him with that!!! it sould get a high 14 with the stock rear gears.
