2007 Helmet Rules for NHRA tracks

From the 2007, yes 2007 already, NHRA Rulebook....

10:7 Helmets and Googles
As outlined under Class Regulations, drivers in all classes, including motorcycles, must wear a helmet meeting Snell or SFI Specifications. Snell K-98 is acceptable in place of any Snell M-rated helmet.

-SFI Spec 31.1A = Snell SA, open face helmet
-SFI Spec 31.2A = Snell SA, full face helmet
-SFI Spec 41.1A = Snell M, open face helmet
-SFI Spec 41.2A = Snell M, closed face helmet

Drivers of NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series and ET cars (13.99 and quicker) must use a helmet meeting Snell K98, 2000,2005 or SFI 31.1A, 31.2A, 41.1A, 41.2A, or 41.1/2005 Specs. Drivers in supercharged (believe this means turbocharged too), front engine, open-bodied cars and Funny Cars must wear a helmet meeting Snell SA2000, SA2005 or SFI 31.1A, 31.2A, or 31.1/2005 Specs. See Class Requirements.

Drivers of any open bodied car wearing an "open face" helmet must wear protective googles. Modifications to helmet/visor/shield are prohibited. All helmets must have the appropriate ceritification sticker affixed inside the helmet.

Hope this helps you out some. Only took me 15 minutes to type that all up. LOL.

If you need any other rules information just ask. I have 3 copies of the new 2007 Rulebook here with me so just ask and I'll either type the whole thing or copy the important stuff.

Snell 90 and 95 are expired.
SFI 31.1, 31.2, 41.1, 41.2 are expired.

Plus I figured this way people could stop asking me what helmet to buy. Now I can just point out this post to them.

So am I understanding this correctly? Next year, since Great Lakes Dragaway is now a NHRA sponsered track, I will have to purchase a helmet for my slow 14 second car if I want to race there?

NO. If you read you only need a helmet if you run 13.99 seconds or faster...it's always been like that though.

If you race in New Jersey (NHRA) you are required to have a helmet reguardless of how fast you run. I have to wear a helmet to run 16.80's. In addition if you have an after market turbo / super charger or spray you need a fire jacket reguardless of ET.

The firejacket is a new rule that was implemented 3/1/2006. You can thank the guys who don't know how to install their nitrous kits and blow their **** all over the track. It is a good rule though. I love mine and it makes me look cooler than I already do at the track

The New Jersey rule is because of a local ordinance, not an NHRA rule.
