Battery in trunk issues at track inspection?

Just wondering if anyone has had problems with the SS S/Cs and how the battery is mounted in the trunk? If I remember right, when I went to the track years ago with my buddy, he had a Integra with the battery mounted in the trunk, and they told him at tech inspection that in order for him to race he had to have a battery shutoff switch mounted to the outside of the car, because his battery was in the trunk.

I was just curious because I plan on going out to the track in a few weeks and don't want to have any issue with tech.

It depends on whether or not you battery is there from the factory or whether it was relocated to the trunk, which was probably the case with your buddy's car.

They shouldn't. It will depend on who inspected your car. In all honestly, most auto-x's I go to, the tech guys assume the fusebox in the front IS the battery, so they'll probably grab it, see if it's loose, and check you off.

If you run across someone who doesn't know anything about Cobalts, they might give you a hard time thinking you relocated it. I'd take along an owner's manual (I think it's in there, it should be, something about the location of the battery) to show that it comes in that location from the factory.

It's still not a bad idea to have a shut-off externally, but I'd not want it mounted anywhere but under the hood that I can think of.

I haven't heard of anyone having issues... just tell 'em it's that way from the factory... then show them under the hood and ask them where the battery would fit under there. LOL.

Hmm, yeah I didn't get an owners manual when I bought the car, I got it used so I'm out of luck there. I guess I'll just have to see what he says.

See if someone can get you a scan just in case.

ACTUALLY....I think if you log into MyGMLink you can get a PDF copy of the owner's manual.

This is correct. I have about 60-70 passes with my car. Never any probs with the battery in the back. Its stock like that so they can't deny you permission to race for that reason alone. Now if it was not at the stock location you would have probs.

See if that link works. Page 5-39 in the section "Checking things under the hood" there's a subtitle for "Battery" it states it is located in the trunk.

If its stock they don't bother you. Look at wheels for example, if you run aftermarket wheels and hit faster then a 12.9 (if I remember right) then you need the studs to protrude thru the lug nut so the tech guys know the wheel won't come off. If you run stock wheels no such issue exists.

I can see the benefit of a rear wheel drive car to install the battery in the trunk. Maybe its time to relocate the Cobalt battery to the front for improved traction. Does that make any sense or am I having a blonde moment?

It's done for a handling advantage for performance driving. The battery on the rear passenger side helps offset the weight of the driver and even out the crossweights.
