Cobalt vs Cavalier at track

I got my 2006 2.4 Cobalt about a year ago. My brother just picked up a '99 Cavalier Z24. We're gonna head to Island Dragway in Jersey shortly to see whose car is better. Who do you think will win?
-Both stock, 5spd
-Cavalier red line: 4500 RPM
-Cobalt red line: 6500 RPM

I had a '98 z24 before I got my cobalt (not a ss/na but still). You should take it pretty easy if you can get off the line. The z24 Redlines at 5500 I believe. I think my tach was yellow at 5500 and red at 6000 if I remember correctly. The quad-four (z24 motor) just does not have any bottom end. They suck off the line until you get it to about 3500 then they get some power. Let us know how it goes. I also had a aem intake, obx racing header, catback, motor mounts, lowered, 17s, and a b&m on mine. Never had it at the track though. Did run a stock redline and he owned me.

You should win. I had a 97 Z24 before my 2006 2.4 and their isn't much comparison. best 1/8th for the Z with a wai was a 10.5 @66 or 67 my Cobalt 2.4 w/ tune/intake/exhaust was 9.6's @74. Granted the Cobalt was modded a lil more but stock 2.4ss's are still in the 9's.

Are they both stock? A stock 2.4 cobalt should be able to easily take a z24, the cobalt should be about .5 second faster in the quarter then the z24. Also I am pretty sure the actual redline of the z24 is 6000 rpm especially since it doesn't hit peak HP till 5600 rpm.

good luck.. you should win ... if you can drive, and I highly doubt that the car redlines at 4500 unless it had a 10 speed tranny lol or it's powerful as all hell

If I had to guess, I would say somewhere around 135 - 140 WHP. It would actually be a closer race against a 2.2 cobalt.

Front wheel drivetrain loss is only about 12% - 15% not 17% - 20% like rear wheel drive cars. So that would put the car closer to around 130 or so. Even still, a 2.2 cobalt would probably be a better race for the z24.

uhh i think this is a drivers race. I have alot of experienc with Cavaliers and Z24s racing at the drag strip. A stock Z24 with a good driver can pull a 15.3 without a problem. Also the Twin Cam Motor is a torque monster down low it is by no means slow off the line. The engine actually peakes its torque twice, once at 2400 RPMS and again at 4200 RPMS the engine reaches 155lbs of torque. The redline on the car is 6500 RPMS and it makes power all the way to the redline. Not to mention the Z24 prolly only weights around 2700-2800 lbs. It should trap around 95MPH stock. There is a reason GM used variations of the twin cam motor for over 20 years, its a strong solid motor and performs very well.

My buddy has stock 2002 z24. He's hit mid to low 15's in the 1/4 mile. I don't know how the older ones performend but if its anything like this one, it should be a good race.

Trapping at 95? Doubt it. Some modded 2.4ss's don't even trap that with a much better highend. Thats rsx-s territory. Hell some ss/sc's only hit 97-98.

Your car only had a 7% drivetrain loss? Either thats not stock or sounds like the dyno operator fugged with your numbers.
