Cobalt vs Cavalier at track
Cobalt vs Cavalier at track
I got my 2006 2.4 Cobalt about a year ago. My brother just picked up a '99 Cavalier Z24. We're gonna head to Island Dragway in Jersey shortly to see whose car is better. Who do you think will win?
-Both stock, 5spd
-Cavalier red line: 4500 RPM
-Cobalt red line: 6500 RPM

You should win. I had a 97 Z24 before my 2006 2.4 and their isn't much comparison. best 1/8th for the Z with a wai was a 10.5 @66 or 67 my Cobalt 2.4 w/ tune/intake/exhaust was 9.6's @74. Granted the Cobalt was modded a lil more but stock 2.4ss's are still in the 9's.
Are they both stock? A stock 2.4 cobalt should be able to easily take a z24, the cobalt should be about .5 second faster in the quarter then the z24. Also I am pretty sure the actual redline of the z24 is 6000 rpm especially since it doesn't hit peak HP till 5600 rpm.
uhh i think this is a drivers race. I have alot of experienc with Cavaliers and Z24s racing at the drag strip. A stock Z24 with a good driver can pull a 15.3 without a problem. Also the Twin Cam Motor is a torque monster down low it is by no means slow off the line. The engine actually peakes its torque twice, once at 2400 RPMS and again at 4200 RPMS the engine reaches 155lbs of torque. The redline on the car is 6500 RPMS and it makes power all the way to the redline. Not to mention the Z24 prolly only weights around 2700-2800 lbs. It should trap around 95MPH stock. There is a reason GM used variations of the twin cam motor for over 20 years, its a strong solid motor and performs very well.
