GM FWD / Cobalt Nationals
7-7-12
talked to one of the track owners tonight. they're already working with GM on getting something together. dates are still up in the air but it'll be in the spring before the heat, or in the fall after the heat. and they're thinking of combining it with another event and bring in pretty much any fwd non-v8(for our side of things) and then combine us with the "ford push rod vs modular shootout" that goes on every year. so we'll be racing against ourselves and some fiestas, focus, etc. and other fwd's. there will be a heads up class, some indexes, and brackets. i told them about getting a media flyer made to send out to magazines and post on websites as well so they'll be working on that sometime in the next month or so. told them that i could probably get CED on board. jason whitfield said he may make the tow if its a big enough event and he didn't have anything of his own to attend. i'd be willing to say that if he's down then brian ballard may be talked in to coming as well as zzp possibly with both their cars.
i'll keep you guys updated.
Who would be interested in a big yearly meet similar to CED but meant solely for racing and open to Cobalts only? With an open 'run what ya brung' heads up class, 12.00 and 13.50 index classes, and an open bracket class for those that don't want to go heads up or index.
This will be held in Tulsa Oklahoma at Tulsa Raceway Park arguably the stickiest track in the central US, home of the Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, start and ending point of the Hot Rod Magazine Drag Week event, testing grounds for NHRA Pro Stock drivers Mike Edwards and Greg Stanfield, and many other high dollar events. I have raced at TRP for many years. I've made passes at Topeka, Dallas motorplex and Ennis, and a track in western NY. by far my favorite is Tulsa aside from Topeka's top of the line facility.
It will be a two day event with qualifying for the heads up and index races on friday along with test and tune passes for everyone competing. End the eliminations on saturday.
On this years schedule there is nothing planned for August 17-18 so we'll be shooting for around those dates next year but it is up to the tracks discretion as to when it takes place but we will be trying to get you guys enough heads up, a few months, so you can plan accordingly.
This is not meant to take away from CED as this is not a meet, it is a racing event with entry fees, payouts, and trophies. Its for people who want to come race, be competitive, start rivalries, and have a good time doing it. Right now i'm thinking Cobalts only but if need be we can open it up to other GM fwd models and turn it into the GM FWD Nationals and an annual event year after year.
all feed back welcome.

i thought about september or october but this years schedule every weekend is booked with something in those months. so unless they want to move some things around for next year idk if it'll work. and i'd rather not try to have it too early because people just won't be able to plan ahead for it. although April is always pretty open. and thats still 10 months away.

got a little conversation for you guys

hey Jason. if you could take a look at this for me i would really appreciate it. i'm trying to get an event together for cobalts or GM fwd only. i know you've been out of the cobalt game for a while. but if i can get this event going and get zzperformance and their 9 and 10 second cobalts out there. would this be something you would be interested in attending. it would be nice to have someone of some what of a "celebrity" status haha. every one knows you and your car and i think if we got you onboard it would create a HUGE turn out. maybe if you come we can snag Brian as well or some other high hp ecotecs.

I'm down. I'm thinking it's gonna be hard to get many "Cobalt Only" people to show up. It might get more attendance if you opened it up to Cavaliers, G5s, HHRs, Cruises, and Chevy Sonics. By this time next year the Buick Verano may also be a good invite.
Another thing to consider is if anyone is interested there is a track with twisties and elevation changes about 30 mins away. Link: http://www.hallettracing.net/

If I can do it, I'll be down. I'm so excited to see where I stand and meet some of you MFers in person. Yes, it's a long drive, but I'm not lying when I say I travel quite a bit and this would be a pretty easy drive for me and the fam.
As long as I can get leave and I'm in the country, You'll see my crazy butt there.

I am game if it goes down, so long as I can get the time off (20 day vaca in August/September may complicate things). Be cool to meet some of the people on here from this part of the country before me and the car move on to the NW part of the country.

For everyone saying it's too far, it's actually in a pretty centralized location. People on the West coast complain about stuff happening on the East coast and vice versa. Yeah it's a long way but it's a good opportunity for West and East to meet up. That would be a good rivalry too. Kinda like the great East Coast/West Coast rap wars.

that and no one can complain about the track being a factor in their slow times. cars have pulled .99 60's, it holds top alcohol cars, its only 619 feet altitude. back when stu owned my car he used to launch at about 5k at his home track and pull good 60's, here he launched like that and bogged down it was so sticky. hell even the 2011 drag week malibu ran about a tenth and a half faster here vs all the other tracks.
