Talking My First Race Ever!

Today, we were at lunchbreak at work and me and my friends usually hang out under a tree in the shade. We all park there to keep cool and some of the guys open their tailgates and we sit in them and eat. Well, my friend pulled up in his Mazda 3 Automatic Stock(2000+?) and started revving his engine. He said "Let's race." I really didn't want to because I hate to get into trouble. But, after a while, I finally gave in to the temptation because I felt I could beat him. I have an 05 Cobalt LS Automatic Stock. There is an abandoned strip of pavement near the tree and we went over there because that is where people usually race. My co-workers are the only one at our worksite, so it was very unlikely that an unsuspecting pedestrian would show up. Also, it is like 50ft away from any buildings and on top of a hill. One of our friends dropped his hat to start the race. I put it in 1st gear before the race and punched it once he dropped his hat.( Are you not supposed to shift before the race starts?) Then I shifted to second later as I neared the redline. The race was over before I switched to regualr drive(3rd?). I payed special attention to staying on my side of the track, so I didn't check speeds or how close he was or anything but all my friends said I smoked him by 1 1/2 to 2 car lengths. I'm pretty proud of my car now. I asked him if he checked his speed and he said he was like 65 m.p.h. so I assume i was 70-80? Anyone got any tips on how to race even better? My friend has a Manual Hyundai Elantra and he might wanna race tomorrow(2000+?)

lol wow.. So first of all... You were hanging out in a tree w/ some guys..? I wasn't aware you could put an automatic in 1st gear physically.. Unless of course you just slowed down.

You are pretty religious I see..

Did you know that street racing is very illegal and you could have killed yourself or worse .. some one else while doing it?

How would you feel if a little girl ran it into the street you were on and you killed her while street racing?

Take it to the track.

A cobalt LS automatic isnt built for racing anyways....

The Elantra is 132 HP / 133 ft lb TQ at 6,000RPM...you should be fine...They weigh 2,700lbs which is about 200 less than an LS I believe, but you have about 20 more HP and TQ than him...should be interesting..

Wow, people jumped on my back pretty quickly. Im weird I guess....Yes you can put an automatic into first gear physically....and it wasn't on a street with other cars it was like a drag strip type thing...far away from any highway...any kids...any people pretty much just my friends.

Er...no? I am guessing not many people here use automatics? The gear selector has R N D 2 1....

The "L" is 1st and 2nd gear... it will only change gears at redline though, so until you get up to right under 6500 rpm it will stay in first

Ok, the tree again lol...let me explain. I was at work. We have lunchbreak and it gets pretty hot. So, we all go grab some food, or if we brought our lunch , we all meet at a huge tree to hang out and people bring their trucks so we can sit in the tailgates & be in the shade. The tree is there to keep us cool. Right next to the tree is an abandoned strip of pavement where a parking lot used to be I assume...a pretty big parking lot. I got auto because 1) it was used & I had no choice. 2) I can't drive stick too well.

EDIT** Now I see where I messed people up about the tree. I put "at a tree up at the top." I didn't mean at the top of the tree, at the top of a little hill is what I meant. My bad, I apologize for the confusion.

CHILL! the dude was racing next to nothing, obviously he knows it was a safe area to do so. Also you're 19 and sound like you're 40. You've only been going to the tracks for 2 months, when did you become GOD? You had a '89 Mustang built, don't tell me you didn't street race that ****? considering you said you first time at the track was in your cobalt 2 months ago right? STFU already track head! Just cause mommy and daddy give you a **** load of money to waste (unless you got a good ass job let me know) doesn't mean everyone has the money to get a SS/SC, so for them a LS could be their race car for their budget.
