Question about Drag slicks

Well I havent see any type of write up or anything regarding the drag slicks for our cars. I am basicly looking to get some for next summer after i get the rest of my mods.. im looking for a cheap decent set. I went to tire rack and found a set but im confused as to how this all works because some wont match up..

now questions.. whats best for my situation? just grab some steelies or something? i was told i would want to get the smallest rim size with the fattest tire.. i did see about 200 a tire for slicks.. i just wanna know the best/cheapest way. i was thinking about getting new rims and using my stock rims and put slicks on those.. any suggestions. again i have the 2.4 SS also once this is all settled someone should make a "how to" explaining the slicks and everything.

yup sidewall is definately your friend when your talkin about slicks/radials for the drag strip.
we are limited to 16 inch due to our brakes, so thats the best size to go with.

Im assuming this is just for track day use right?
have you considered the problem of our toothpick axles? hehe

Are slicks really neccessary on a 2.4? Are you turbo'd? I dont know alot about slicks however I do know they would be the last thing on my list... Have you done an axle swap yet? you might wanna do that before you consider "slicks".

now that really doesnt matter. slicks come to about 200 a tire.. it would be just for the race track.. im not turboed or supercharged.. once i get the cams in and tuned.. i might go for a nitrious kit.. either way ill be happy once i get 14.0 or better.. i have talked to a few members and with the 1/4 times and everything what more i need to do to get that. i mean its not that much money.. and it would be something fun for the track so i dont burn my regular tires anyways. plus some good slicks might be able to take a good .3 off the 1/4 if not more.. i dont think ill need new axels because im just planning on doing about 220 whp N/A and maybe a 50 shot... would u seriously recommend getting axels? at 200whp?

also ill be looking for DOT drag radials.. not really slicks.. just because the competitions that i will be doing at the local track require DOT tires..

Well if your an auto then I would say you don't have to worry about axle shafts but if you have a stick I would upgrade the tooth picks. I found out the hard way this past season.

Aren't most of the axle problems due to wheel hop though, and not power?

I have questions about slicks too. I went to my tire shop and talked to them about getting a set with wheels. They got the right sized wheels (16 x 7"), but started talking drag radials. As soon as I got home I called Hoosier. They were great and answered all of my questions. They said that if you go with slicks, due to the Cobalt brake size restricting us to 16's we should go with 26x9.50-16LT. You can find them in the Quick Time Pro D.O.T. section, #17430. They said they are just like slicks, but have a groove in them.

Here's a pic:

Now, considering my build (see sig) how necessary would it be to install axles? I'm not staged. Do you think I could get away with running the slicks as I am and, for the most part, be okay with my axles?

Here's what I'm thinking for axles:

Axles are my next mod, but I gotta save some money for them. Then clutch, exhaust and front mount. Then I'm going stage 2.
