1st and reverse problems or driver boo boo
1st and reverse problems or driver boo boo
just wondering if anybody has had problems with there manual getting there car into 1st and reverse. most of the time with i shift theres no prob, until i stop at a light-put it in to neutral and wait, green light comes and i feels like i am forcing it into 1st gear-same goes with reverce, but i figure i wasnt pushing the stick over enought. thats is the only prob comes once i stop. could it be she needs more time to be broken in still? rather stiff-got over 8000 miles. have an oil change appointment this friday-if there is a prob i can have them take a look at it then
-thanx for the help

? Does this occur only on a hill...or anytime you got to neutral at a light?

Typical response..."we didn't notice anything"!
If I were you, I'd keep either a video camera...or a cell phone with vid capability with you so that when it shows itself you can record it and prove it. Hard to argue with evidence....but that's what it's come to anymore.

...its a new car... 1st is really notchy, i had that prob when i first got it, and on a rare occation i still get it... Its be 1st has notches to prevent you from going into it unless ur going under 20MPH(i believe)... Once its broke in some itll go away, no issuese, and not driver boo boo either...
I've notice the same thing but only when I am sitting at a light with my foot off the clutch. With the clutch in nothins spinning at any real speed. With it out the input shaft is spinning in the tranny so when you hit the clutch to shift the synchronizers are trying to equalize the difference ie hard to get in gear. Thats been my experiance, if I remember correctly though 1st and reverse are on the same fork?
maybe. If your still having a problem then there might be something wrong with that shift fork or sycro/blocking ring.

with some of my past manuals( and i didnt know this at the time) i would ALWAYS just hold the clutch in when i was coming to a stop or stopped at a light- i ve corrected this habit as well as down shifting to slow down when needing to stop ( more wear and tear on the engine- brakes are cheaper to replace then an engine)but still i find my self having to down shift because if i dont, i just look stupid putt putting a long in the wrong gear while cars are are changing lanes to get way from me
If this is at a stop and with the clutch in it is because the transmission has stopped rotating. Let out on the clutch with the car in neutral, then snick it into first. It should just slip right in then. Same with reverse. I have the reverse problem on my CRX and my T/A. From worn syncros, but that's a different reason. These cars are brand new so it can't be that unless you are abusing the tranny. Which I doubt any of you are.

I have been having the exact same problems with mine! I went to put in my Hurst shifter last night, hoping that it would solve the problem and I found that a bushing was broken. I don't know if it is the culprit, but I need to get it replaced. Sometimes I have to push with all my might to get it in. I don't want to take it to the stealership because I know that they aren't going to want to do anything.
I have the same problem with 1st and reverse but its completely random and putting it into another gear (2nd 3rd 4th) fixes the problem and then it just slides right in. I don't try to force it at all. Maybe I have a cracked bushing too and it locks up because its catching...hmmm.
Reverse isn't syncronized, that's its problem. As for first, yes letting the clutch out and pushing it back in will usually work. Try putting it in second and then first, that always works on any manual transmission.
