6 Speed Trans Options
6 Speed Trans Options
I know this has come up from time to time, but I didn't find the info I'm looking for in previous threads...
What are the known obstacles to installing the F40 trans in a 2.0 Cobalt application? If this trans is used in some Saabs, does this mean the correct bolt pattern exists? Or were they only used on V6 Saabs?
If the right bolt pattern exists, can the case half from a Saab be installed on a G6 trans? Input shaft?
Does the Saab F40 use the 3 shaft design?
Does the F35 diff interchange?
Any info would be appreciated.

The G6 F40 and the Saab 9-3 2.0T F40 have different bell housings. So the G6 version wont bolt up to the ecotec. But otherwise they are similar. You can get a new pontiac G6 F40 for $400 new. The Saab ones are over $1000 used.
The input shaft is 23teeth / 25mm which is different from the Cobalt. So a new clutch is needed though. The axles use the same teeth and diameter though and mine fit and lock in the transmission just fine.
Best guess for a clutch is something like this exedy since it has the same diameter and the right input shaft specs
Exedy hyper single clutch for the focus
Hyper Single Part # EH01SD
Clutch Cover Type PUSH
Clamp Load (lb) 2655
Disc O. D. (mm) 225
Spline Teeth/Major Dia (mm) 23T/25
After a lot of calling around I figured out the Bellhousing from the Saab version isn't offered even new from the factory. I was lucky and found a guy who sold me his used bellhousing off of a dead saab F40
The shift levers are in different position but should fit up next to the engine fine.
I have a mastershift system which is a programmable paddle shifter. I should be able to hook it right up and just program different cable movements to work with my existing cables. a new manual shifter would be needed and different cable lengths
The quaife LSD is different from the F40 to the F35.

Saab Bellhousing

Saab bellhousing fit on the pontiac F40. perfect fit.

The backup and speed sensors are the same from F40 to F35
So in summary. The Saab 9-3 F40 or a Pontiac G6 F40 wtih the saab bellhousing will bolt right up to the ectoec. A new clutch is needed, The axles should fit fine. The sensors are fine. New shift cables and shifter would be needed. the LSD would need to come from quaife specifically for the F40
The only part I dont know of is mounting in a cobalt.
I haven't mounted it in the Atom yet just because of time.

just a random quesiton. if you got the input shafts and everything to mate up and everything just fine and the only thing that doesn't is the bolt pattern from the transmission to the engine. couldn't you cnc an aluminum adapter plate kinda like a wheel hub adapter. bolt it to the engine with a gasket and then bolt the trans to it with a gasket. then just make the neccesary adjustments to the mounts and transaxle?
Bolus- thanks for the info. That did answer some of my questions.
I have been looking forward to the Regal trans swap, but that would realistically be a couple years out and still probably expensive then. We have a G6 6 speed sitting here, already.

The biggest problem is finding that saab bellhousing. I got lucky on that one. Unless you want to buy the whole trans but that defeats the purpose of a inexpensive replacement.
After changing them for '07, GM dumped the '06 versions as surplus. The going rate has been dropping for a couple years and seems to be leveling off in the $400-$500 range. I'm guessing the prices will start going back up soon.
I got mine from these guys. http://www.schramauto.com/
They had about 40 surplus that were brand new. There are a few other places selling for about $500 new as well.

Just did some gear calculations, and the gearing is almost identical through 3rd gear as far as relation to rpm and mph. 4th and 5th are actually longer in the F40 and then of course the revs are lower in 6th cruising at 60mph.
Of course I'm using 8k rpm as a shift point and a 24.5" tall tire since that's how tall my slicks are.
Looks like I'll just stick with upgrading to a 4.45 final drive since I'm a drag racer and I'd just like to shorten the gears a bit.
Thanks for all the info though.

Wow, Schram does have a lot of new ones for $400! If only we could find saab bellhousings. What is the torque rating on the stock GTP clutch? It may be enough for us sub 300wtq M62 guys...That would make this more affordable.
I found a 50k mile saab 6 speed for $850. That's not too bad.
