i dunno about the IRL, but the f23 in the 2.2/2.4 cars uses ATF instead of normal oil

How long have you been running the 75W-90 Max Gear Royal Purple stuff? Any problems with it yet?

EDIT POST: I'm finally done with my clutch/flywheel install and holy hell what a differance. I would suggest to anyone to use the Royal Purple 75w-90 Max Gear oil in their tranny! This stuff makes the shifts so smooth its like butter!

they take a special gm fluid that most dealers don't carry but the synchromax is a universal fluid that can go in most transmissions

I ran it for a long time in my old '02 z24, loved the stuff..as stated above, you notice that the shifts are smoother like it slips in better, especially once the motor warms up..

I have been using the Royal purple max gear 75w90 for about 12,000 miles now and its is great. The shifts are alot smoother. Got it for 10.95 a quart at summit.

Wait, so exactly which one is needed for the 2.2 tranny? I m willing to give it a shot, I dont like the notchiness of the tranny, especially when its cold out.

Just put some RP Synchromax in today during my axle install.

definately a noticable smoothness in the shifts now
pretty happy with it so far.

i notice a few people posting in nearly every single thread about this stuff saying you have to use max gear 75-90.....if you take a close look, RPs website suggest that all GM vehicles using GM synchromesh, use RP synchromax as the replacement.

I dont think you can go wrong with either, but I did plenty of reading before i chose....and all arrows pointed to synchromax being the best choice for us IMO

I've had two quarts of it sitting in my trunk for a few weeks now. I haven't got around to shortening an allen wrench to drain the tranny.

Any tips? I want to find a way NOT to hack up a perfectly good allen.

the 75-90 meets the GL 4 requirement that the stock stuff meets

and?
there are quite a few applications listed as needing GL-4, that suggest using synchromax for the RP replacement.

Im just adressing the fact that nearly every thread i searched on here about royal purple had people posting that synchromax isnt good enough.

yet thats the exact oil that RP suggests for our cars.

i'm leary about putting the heavy weight stuff in my tranny where it gets cold around my neck of the woods. Anom, how has driveability been with the synchromax when cold?

Anyone else, how is cold weather driveability with either the max gear or the synchromax?

A how to with some good pictures for the SS/SC would make me a lot more enthusiastic about changing this fluid...wink wink.

PS-That was directed at all of you! lol

Also, does anyone know what the recommended interval per GM is for changing the fluid?

From the reading ive done, either max gear or synchromax will work just fine.

after doing a little more digging, it appears synchromax is basically just the same stuff with another additive to extend the life of your synchros.
