Automatic Trans Fluid Change

I have reached 50k on my balt and figured it would be a good time to do some routine maintenance like change the trans fluid. My question is this, can I change the fluid and filter myself? I have heard rumors that the trans system is a closed system that does not allow for a DIY job and needs to be taken to a service shop in order to change.

You certainly can change it yourself, but i am a firm believer in flush services like BG and others, this transfuses all of the fluid, a pan drop and filter gets only 50% absolute max.
