Big Shifting Problem

Problem is with my brothers 05 cobalt ss s/c, went to go somewhere this morning and he had trouble getting it into gear and when he finally did it would just pop back out of gear, anyways he managed to limp it to where he was going and most of the way back, untill it would not go in gear at all. His shifter feels like its completely broken, not even attached to the tranny. So would it be like a combination of shift syncros or the cable?. Im not really sure though, any ideas? Cars his DD and he needs it going as soon as possible, hes not sure if his remaining powertrain warranty will cover it or not, so sorry for the long rant, any help is appreciated
