Chevy guys, I need help
Chevy guys, I need help
Can anyone get me an exploded view of the rear differential on a 2001 s10 reg cab short box standard 2.2L flex fuel? Its howling like crazy and I think I have to replace the pinion bearing. Any help is greatly appreciated. No shops around here want to take it on, they all just want to replace the axle.
Thanks

find a driveline shop, they will take it on.
when is it making the noise, on or off throttle, or does it come in and out with different road speeds??? id bet its a pinion bearing, most common issue, however id recomend getting an overhaul kit, that will have the pinion bearings and carrier bearings, pinion seal, crush sleeve, threadlock and pattern grease. i would also recomend changing the axle bearings and seals, for that you will need an axle bearing puller kit. when its all apart have a close look at the axles, if there is a groove were the axle seal rides the axle should be replaced, or you can use an axle saver bearing/seal, also look for pitting were the bearing rides, if its pitted the axle needs to be changed. have a look at the side and spider gears, if you see any wear or pitting pick up a side/spider kit, its easy to change when your in there.
keep in mind you do need special tools to rebuild a diff. you will need bearing pullers to get the bearings off, a press to install the inner pinion bearing, axle bearing pullers, drivers to get the bearings and seals in, a dial type lb/in torque wrench to measure pinion bearing preload, and a dial indicator to measure ring gear backlash. if you dont have the tools and arent experianced with differentials, id suggest against tackling it yourself as it can turn into a disaster.

Makes noise only when on the throttle. I'd say starts around 40mph. Gets louder the more you drive at one time. I know that this is gonna be one major pain in the rear but my dad is gonna pitch in on it. He's done quit a few with his stock cars, but he says they are old, and this might be different. He was hoping for an exploded view before just pitching in. Thanks Sharkey.
the diff in your truck will be a 7.5 10 bolt, its really no different than a 1960s 10 bolt, just a bit smaller. there are a few different variations of rear differentials (1 peice case and drop out 3rd member, either can have non flaoting, semi floating, or full floating axles) but the basics are all the same.
