Destroyed pinion and crown gears
Destroyed pinion and crown gears
Has anyone stripped the teeth off their ring and pinion gears?
Saab uses the same transmission F35, I have destroyed three gearboxes ripping the teeth off the pinion and ring gears, this usually takes out the bell housing also.
The internals in the cobalt gearboxes are exactly the same as in the Saab.

I will let you know if this is the problem for sure tommarow. but the tech says the problem is in the diff.
scince the car is only 500 miles old they are just going to put in a whole new trani

My understanding that the non-lsd dif is the weak link in this tranny. I guess I will find out how well the LSD dif holds up under high tq\hp once my engine is finished.

i heard that it was the shafts
This is what happens when a big heavy car tries to get going with too much power on weak stock parts. Maybe you should look at another route man. A lot of us run over 300ft lbs too, none such problem.
Three transmissions in 500 miles?
Smells like operator error to me. Or is that a smokey burnout? Maybe too many clutch dumps at peak torque...
Dude... seriously. You don't get three defective transmissions in a row. That and when Saab designed that car. They knew what kind of power was going to be put through the trans so they picked one that can handle it. Barring abuse, that transmission would probably last at least 100k.

Lasted three years
The last gearbox rebuild lasted over three years. The failure occured on a road racing track at the end of a 20 minute plus session. heat may have been an issue.
The gearbox in the lastest saab 5 speeds uses the same gearset as the cobalt sc box. the code number is F35. I have a Quaife installed in two of my Saab gearboxes, The 2.3 liter turbo saab engine has a rediculus torque peak at 3500 rpm. mine measures over 3000 lb/ft ot the wheels uncorrected at 4000+ elevation.
I think the sc 2.0 engine is much more linear and perhaps kinder on driveline parts.
I've also done drive shafts, these parts are pretty much the same as the ones in the cobalt also.

Not exactly "big Heavy Car"

The heat would explain it. Thought the gears looked like they got a bit warm but its hard to tell blueing from a pic.
Any source for cryo-ed or treated parts made with stronger alloys? That's probably the way to go if you can find a manufacturer.
