Downshift or neutral??
why WOULD someone double clutch a car that has synchros... or do you mean the thing where you push the clutch to get the rpm's up...
I down shift, kinda. Leave it in the same gear till about 1.2k to 1.5k, then drop down to a lower gear. How far down depends on speed and situation, though second is the lowest I go to. You can stop very quickly from the bottom of second or third, so no need to go to first.
*Edit*
Thats in most situations. If there is an emergency I gotta stop fast in (read my story in the premo hidden area) then I'll go to straight hard down shifting, heel toe, brakes in as hard as possible without engaging ABS.

you guys that go into first every now and then when your downshifting are just damaging your first gear. first is for complete stops and going. you should never have to downshift into first for any reason other then the start/stop.
Yeah, that was the first thing I was told - don't EVER downshift into first.
first gear in the 2.2 n 2.4 is just too short
if you had any referral to me i was sayin that i rarely go into first, ive been pullin out in 2nd for the past two years unless its uphill or racing... thats what i meant, sometimes if i get tricked like at a slight uphill redlite n i put it in first to stop n the lite turns green on me before i get to a full stop (put it in first at 5mph or under with a lil revving) then thats bout the only time other than what i mentioned before.

If I am coming to a corner, I downshift, if I know I have to stop I just stay in gear until like 10mph and then neutral. Brakes are for stopping/slowing the car, not the transmission. Dragging out the clutch on downshifts will wear the clutch, mounts, engine, etc...brake pads are much easier to change than any of those.
your using more gas in neutral than if you downshift like your supposed to, research something called "Decelleration Fuel Cut Off"
also, you will not wear out your clutch if you revmatch properly.
your transmission/clutch/engine IS there for decellerating, not just accel.
please dont justify poor driving habits with ill informed information
Neutral coasting is dangerous, and in some cases, illegal.
whoever taught you to do it. was wrong.
