Drive, Low, 1st will not engage. Reverse is fine

Car is a 2006 2.4 SS automatic. About 68-69k. Never had tranny problems. Pulled out today, no problem, got to a stop sign, tried to pull out and nothing. Had to back up and put it into a parking space. Borrowed a car and went to my appt., came back an hour and a half later. Same issue. Let it run, tried again, same issue. Park and neutral work fine and will start the car. Reverse works like reverse should with full power. Neutral down to 1st is like 1 single stop on the gear shifter. All it does is rev. I can't find anything on this. I stopped at a mechanic's down the street and asked if it could be some kind of switch and he said no, bad tranny. Anybody know anything about this? Help is much appreciated.

It's at Army's Transmissions in Homestead to be examined tomorrow. I asked him how much to replace if it is shot. He told me today on the phone $1,800 rebuilt, $1,000 used. I don't know as much about transaxles as I know about transmissions. 15 years ago I bought a TCI kit for $150 and for $600 more in labor and parts (or maybe it was $600 total, I can't remember) I had the C-4 in my Mercury Zephyr built to the hilt, including rebuilt stall converter. It chirps tire on both upshifts with a Detroit Locker diff and good tires. Be nice if I could get a rebuild kit for this and get something stronger.

it could be a valve body issue, but it most likely forward clutch/sprag related failure.
