F35 replacement options

So im planning some big time power in the future and i have some questions about the 6 speed swap

assuming I picked up one with the LSD in it, what all extra do I need to install, can I still use my stock shifter and shift cables?

Also Ive heard that the tranny in the new 08 cobalt turbo is geared different, a longer 5th gear would be nice for better highway mpg, again would different shifter or cables be needed?

the turbo cobalt f35 has the same 1-5th gearing, but the final drive is 3.83 instead of 4.05, meaning all the gears are longer. it however is still the same weak tranny.

the f40 6 speed, nobody has done that swap yet. i am trying to find info on it, what i know so far is that the saab turbo only has 1 set of axles, so they are the same between the f35 and f40. as far as the clutch, shifter cables, and most important the mounts, no clue as of yet

Although Quaife does now make an LSD for the F40, there was no Factory F40 with an LSD in it unless that changed for '08 or '09 models.

oh your reffering to the quaife f35 6 speed conversion. it is not a complete tranny, its just the shafts, gears, forks and end cover. it will need to be assembled into a bare f35 case by a professional. iirc it was $3800 last time i saw it, figure another $1000 for the limited slip, $1000 to have it built, not a cheap option.

not even close. in the end you have about the same highway gear and a close ratio tranny. it is stronger, but there has to be other alternatives out there.

Just so you guys know the F40 6SPD for the turbo saab 9-3 ecotec does directly bolt up. Uses the same exact axles and the lengths are the same and you can take the LSD diff from the F35 drill out the FD gear rivets and swap on the F40 FD gear by using hardened bolts/nuts with red locktight. If you run into the male female issue on the LH axle and the trans has a Male spline sticking out don't worry. That is an insert and can be removed to make that side of the trans female. If its not there and you need it you can buy that piece seperate and install it to make that side male.

How do I know this. been there done that on another project and am considering it for my SS/TC thats comming.

The Quaife LSD for the F40 is Identical to the F35 LSD

But the $64,000,000 question is what are your clutch/flywheel options???

i did some research, the saab 9-3 uses the same clutch and flywheel between the f35 and f40. i cant confirm if this is the same clutch as the ss/sc, the drawings i saw showed a 10 bolt flywheel, but iirc the lk9 and lsj are the same bottom end. i doubt they would have changed the bellhousing in any way for a different clutch design, so id asume the lsj clutch wouldwork, or any aftermarket lsj clutch

I found this...

GEAR RATIO CHANGES FOR QUICKER ACCELERATION
To adapt the F40 to North American applications and maximize performance, 3rd through 6th gears have been changed to higher-ratio gears. The ratio for 3rd gear is now 1.37:1, and the ratio for 4th gear is no longer an overdrive, with a new ratio of 1.05:1. The 5th gear ratio is 0.85:1 and the 6th gear ratio is 0.71:1
I think this is it (finally!)

http://www.autoweek.com/files/specia...rocon_info.doc

Gear ratios (:1):
First: 3.77
Second: 2.04
Third: 1.37
Fourth: 1.05
Fifth: 0.85
Sixth: 0.71
Reverse: 3.54
Final drive ratio: 3.55

More specific:

http://www.media.holden.com.au/us/po...ME_F40_MU9.xls

Gear ratios: MU9
First: 3.769
Second: 2.040
Third: 1.365
Fourth: 1.048
Fifth: 0.846
Sixth: 0.707
Reverse: 3.538
Final Drive Ratio: 3.55

As best I can tell they list the MU9 (F40) for both the I4 and the V6 Turbo... Dosen't seem right tho.

That's what we've all be thinking, that the 3.9L V6 G6 bellhousing is different. However, that doesn't answer if the 2.8L V6 Trans in the 9-3 is different than the 2.0L Trans in the 9-3, nor does it give us a part # for the Saab version(s).

I think the answer really depends on your definition of "big time power".
Even the F40 will only take you so far which is the reason I went the direction I have.

But this is what gets me... http://media.gm.com/us/saab/en/produ...dex.html#specs

Open that and scroll down to Transmissions.
Three options, one listed as:

"6-speed manual, std on Aero, 2.0T"

So is it the same trans in the I4 and V6 or not?

The V6 and I4 Saabs use the same tranny. They will bolt up to the LSJ. This swap has been done before on a turbo 9-3. Check out SaabCentral.
