You need to adjust the white cable on the left. put the shifter in neutral unlock the white cable end move the shifter about 3/8 of a inch to the left and relock cable end. ctcobaltss let me know about this. do a search there should be a more detailed set of instructions.

This is the same trouble I had adjusted it like this & it works like it should

I knew it had something to do with that cable. I tried to adjust it, but maybe it'll work if I find the instructions.

Thanks

PS did you also have trouble with the reverse lockout? I think it's related to the 5th gear travel issues.

Sure did. There is a little clip you just pry up does not come off. just lifts enough to unlock the cable. Its pretty painless

Is it wierd that I had to move my shifter to the right to get my 5th and reverse working right?

No, I did also, hey is it tough to get it into reverse? My shifter doesn't want to clear the reverse lockout thing without some pressure.

Mine goes in Ok, I had to shave some plastic off of the reverse lockout though. Seems odd, but after a couple of days/week or so, I think it is shifting better than when I first installed it.

After I adjusted the cables, reverse lockout was fine, never had to shave or modify anything else.

Yes, but I don't know if other knobs would work with the reverse lockout.

adjust the cable as instructed above and it will be your favorite mod on the car!!! i had the exact same issue when i installed mine and i adjusted the cable on the left and it worked perfectly.

when you remove the center console and try and shift it into reverse look at the cable on the left. you will see that it is at the end of it's travel which is why you are having trouble shifting it into reverse without force. once you see that you will know right away what you need to do.

This might sound weird.... Ok I just got my hurst shifter put on. When I throw from 4th to 5th. The shifter will move way to the right of 5th. I know it is a short throw shifter so the throw is shorter but, do i need to adjust my cables?? I haven't thrown it back into 3rd yet, but I have to keep looking for 5th every time ("Maybe because I am use to the stock position it was in"), and If i get going through the gears fast I don't want to accidentally downshift. Or do I just need to get use to the really short throw. Other than that Reverse Lockout works great first time out!

you only want to move the part that attaches to the cable towards the back of the car about 1/8 to 1/4 of an inch

As you look at the two cables, you'll want to adjust the cable on the left. That should fix your 5th gear problem.

I tell this to everyone who installs the Hurst... when removing the stock shifter please... please please... put it in 4th and mark the 2nd cable closer to the passenger side with a magic marker right before the cable slides into the slot.

Also, you do not have to adjust the 1st cable. Leave it alone... follow these steps and reinstalling is a snap.

Then you screwed up somewhere, I've installed 3 of these shifters and all came out flawless by following the method above. No offense taken I hope.

sneaky, I did the same thing as Tazmanian Devil. Put it in 4th, marked the right hand cable, installed the Hurst, reattatched the cable where indicated. IN THEORY, that should be all you have to do, but for some shifters you ABSOLUTELY MUST adjust the left hand cable. I've seen/helped with many other shifters installed and I know what I'm doing, but on SOME of the Hursts, you've gotta adjust the left-hand cable to get it to work. 1-4 work great with just the cable marking but for 5th and reverse I had to move the shifter to the right about 1/4" from stock position.

See I did that too. it tells you in the instructions to put it in 4th gear, before dissassembly. I marked both cables being it is my first time doing this and measured off the dash and off my passenger door and the hurst sat in the exact same location after install and only problem was hitting 5th gear, but reverse was fine. After moving the shifter to the passenger side with the cable on the left about 3/8 of an inch it is fine, I might move it another 1/16 - 1/8 tonight, It still feels like it could use a little more adjustment to make my 5th gear slide in easier.
