I'm having an issue with my transmission that seems to occur when my car is cold and up until now was fine after it warmed up.

I'm having problems where when I try to shift into first, third, or fifth it feels as if there's something blocking the gear that's mushy. Almost like I jammed a shirt or rag and it stopping the shifter from going into gear.

Usually you get that little 'pop' into gear when you shift and it doesn't happen. I've had to just shove it in and it still drives fine as if it's in gear but it doesn't "pop" in like normal. If I try multiple times eventually it will 'pop' in.

It used to only do this in first when I first started it up in COLD weather but after it warmed up it was fine. Now (mind you we're just getting into winter today with our first snow fall) and it's being problematic. Really bugging me.

Any thoughts as to what could cause this?

 

clutch not fully disengaging? how cold is it?

 

good possibility it's the shifter cable. mine was doing something like that. and it was a bitch to get into reverse.

 

Not that cold, today was only 0 Celsius or so. Like I said it just feels like mush but second, and fourth are perfectly fine.

 

Mine did the same thing in cold weather when first going to drive it then no problem when warmed up

 

Did you find a solution to this? Today it really didn't go away it just kept doing it. Usually it would be fine after a couple of minutes of driving and the car got up to operating temp.

 

Not really I just put up with it, but I no longer have the car

 

Have you ever greased the cables on the tranny side? One of them might be binding when it's cold out...?

 

Sometimes I find shifting into first a bit tricky after being in reverse.

What I'll do is throw it into 3rd, then back over to 1st.

After I've put it in 3rd, it goes into 1st like butter.

I'm thinking my cables are slowly starting to bind over time.

I don't find that the cold makes it any worse.

Everything on the whole car is overall tighter when it's cold.

I know its cold out when the bottom of my door starts to rub on the front fender at the bottom. CAR SHRUNK! lol

 

I had this exact same problem, it was the shifter cables. I ended up having to replace them and now it shifts like new. I hope this helps.

I’ve had to do two things for this problem with shifting. First is adjusting the cables. If that doesn’t work your master might be seeping off a bit. I’ve even had the rod that goes into the master from the pedal Bend or brake causing all kinds of clutch problems.
