Question on LSD

I'm looking at getting an 06 1-SS. 2.4 / 5 speed. I've (2.4 DOHC VVT) 171hp and it actually has a higher EPA rating (34mpg vs 32mpg) than my cav. I test drove an auto (the wife was with me, so I couldn't test the car, but I could tell it had some cojones.

The salesman that came to us on the lot is a moron "Oh, yeah, the SS...they run about 24K...." then we find them for ~19 on the lot

I did some on-line checking, and the base 1-SS (no options) is $16,900 ...the wife hit him with that info a few days ago when he called to "thank us for our interest in "his" dealership.' No word back since

Now I'm looking up LSD info for the car (only available on the 2-SS AKA Supercharged for $1,500) and I'm going to tell him I want a no-options car with the LSD ordered and installed.

The LSD isn't factory available on that car, so I was looking into either a quaife (torsen) or a Phantom Grip LSD conversion. I've heard the torsen LSDs aren't the greatest for snow driving and Phantom Grip states they don't have one for the Cobalt (yet), but I was wondering if the transmissions in these cars are carry-overs from some of the older models that PG does make a kit for. Can anyone help out?

No, he's talking about the 2.4, it has the same tranny as the 2.2.

As far as i am aware the Quaife LSD is only available for the 2.0 S/C. Give them a call they will be able to point you into the right direction. The cost of the unit is $1500 plus install which will be near $800-$1000 unless you are close with a shop. They won't have any instock until the 1st of feb which is next week so if anyone wants one you better order it becuase they have been out for the last 4 months

GM only offers the quaife lsd for the ss sc
but there is a quaife lsd available from quaife america directly for the 2.2/2.4, you might be better off going that way

Chevypowered, I am very interesting on how it all works out for you. I dont have the LSD, and will probably need it come next summer when i will probably be running mid-low 12s.

I was talking with the SRT guys and they said installing a LSD is a hard ass job. You need to dissassemble parts of the tranny and it is a complicated install. So when you get it installed and whatnot, be sure to let us all know how it turns out.

So it's the same tranny as the 2.2 Eco? Because if that's the case, Phantom Grip DOES have a unit for the 1-SS. Check this link $400 VS $1,500+

I would say thats a joke, you get what you pay for and with that your not getting much. But hey is you want some subpar piece of crap installed in your tranny go for it. Just remember when it fails the cost of labor to get it fixed is going to empty your wallet.

Yes, it's the same tranny as the 2.2 Eco in the Cobalts, not sure if it's the same from the Cavis or not. I looked at that Phantom Grip stuff and I don't think I'd put that on my car if they paid ME the $400. Quaife is unbeatable when it comes to quality and like Chevypowered said, if you put something in the tranny and it breaks then it would have been far cheaper to go with the Quaife in the first place.

what kind of results would you expect to get from the lsd in the quarter mile? maybe think about whether or not it would be worth it to you

EXACTLY...not everyone cares about how fast you can go in a straight line. The LSD is crucial on an auto-x course. I can't wait to put one on mine, I'm sick of trying to get a good run out of a hairpin without it. You just sit there and spin the tires.
