Recall on SS Tranny ? ? ?
I'm looking at getting a 05' SS Cobalt and am in the process of stripping my current Cavy of it's parts. In the meantime I've been REALLY looking into the Cobalt SS and was recently told by a Dealer that I should wait untill 2006 to buy one. He said that there is a recall on the Tranny that comes with the SS stating that the housing is too thin and they have been having trannys crack after a short while. Anyone know anything about this ?

I have 5000 km on mine and noticed no problems. I think your dealer is B.S. ing you brcause he can't get one before 2006. and he wants you to pay more for an 06

Supplier discount
I work for a major railroad and get the supplier discount ...........
It is roughly 900 bucks less off the price than the current pricing. Go for one now or pay 900 more later ! Honest I checked so that I would not be pressured .... Good luck. Bob

There are currently 5 campaigns(recalls) issued on the 2005 Cobalt...none of them are SS specific or related to transmissions in any way, there are the 2 different coolant fan circuit/airbag circuit recalls(05034, 05046), the headlamp FMVSS compliance(04100) and lastly 05055 and 05032 which were dealer inventory upgrade campaigns and not consumer(car owner) related.

Thanx for the info
I haven't gotten a post card yet about a recall and I get about 1 survey a month for my car so they know my address.

I thought I read somewhere in another thread that 2005 SS's would stop production on JUne 17th. Therefore, any dealers without current stock would have to get one from another dealer which costs them money to do. This may be the reason why the dealer is disauding the purchase of a 2005. Even though I ordered a 2006, when I asked my dealer if they could get me a 2005 instead, they used every excuse in the book to discourage me from doing so. The only reason why I'm waiting is because G85 is not available on Canadian 2005 models.

This transmission is in production in europe in the Saab turbo there for a tested design. The grand am cup cars run the same trans except for a final drive ratio change with no issues. I wouldn't be concerned with its reliability.

No trans recall!
As stated ,there are a few recalls for the Cobalt, but none for the trans. As far as the '05 , yes production did cease and the '06 is being made. At my dealership we had 2 SS's ordered under my name because of the G85 issue. That would assure us of another car, but we wre told that my SS would be one of the last for '05 and the other would be an '06. So, yes the dealer is not being truthful with the recall answer, but is correct about not getting an '05.

No , I am not saying to buy .......
Just that I had checked because I did not want to be pressured into my new SS . But the 900 dollars saved went directly to a 6 year 100 K mile powertrain warranty from the GM Protection plan. I put 142 miles on every work day and the 5/60 would only last about 20 months. That is my 2 cents. Not much but I hope it explains my angle. Enjoy the weekend .
