From everything i know the transmission is right out of GM's saab 9-3 and therefor like all the saabs since an eternity ago you had to pull up on the shifter to put into reverse, it indeed was a safer feature from saab. Unlike saab though you dont have to leave the car in reverse to get the key out which i am assuming is called a reverse lock, yet another safety feature. So it should be there because its a manual saab transmission which saab's have had for forever or atleast i am lead to believe correct if im wrong

If you look at the shifter, and go to where you slide up to 5th, it hits the guard. Reverse is further over than on other manual trasmissions. 6th would have been right below 5th, and without that guard, you could have hit the slot to go to reverse.

That really wasn't a nice post. I got my car all the way home before ever having to put my car in reverse. Then when I went to, I thought I had a broken car, My husband and brother in law were laughing at me because I couldn't figure out how to put it in reverse. My brother in law got into the car and he couldn't figure it out either. It took three of us including a Cobalt SS owner and we still had a hard time figuring out that you need to pull up on the ring to shift in reverse. The SS has a button to lock the reverse out, in the SS/SC you have to pull up on the ring under the shifter knob to put it in reverse.

Oh yea, and if you look at the official cobalt 1/4 list, even though I'm the #1 spot in stock, I guess I shouldn't be driving.... sheesh, I wish I knew this when I was picking up my SS.
Ok guys after deleting 25 posts lets keep this subject going. No more flaming. As far as I think GM, is the only people that put the safety feature on the manuals. Of course I've never really seen/driven any other cars with manuals.
