serious issues *PICS INSIDE*

Ok, long story short, 06 SC bought used @ 40k.. Looked good on the lot, got it home and discovered it had been modded previously. Trans began to rattle and scratch and began grinding 2nd while engine braking (syncro?)

I decided to check out the oil, naturally and this is what I found: (sorry for quality)

fluid everywhere on the housing

a whole .25 qt. or 8oz. of oil from the trans with what appears to be a snap ring, not a ton of material on the plug though

I'm just trying to keep her full until I can put it on a lift. Any ideas or suggestions for whats to blame here? I can't see any physical damage to the case, so I'm thinking seal. Clutch still grabs fine though.

unfortunately they usually crack inside the bell housing (where the clutch is) which is kinda looks like might be the issues if you see fluid coming out from btwn the trans and the motor. Bring the car back.

can't

didn't begin having problems until recently (Jan.), bought it 6 months ago

too late, right?

I'm a ******* for not catching it earlier, but, I don't think theres anything I can do at this point other than get in contact with CED and search car-parts.com for a new or used one...

If it is just a small crack from wheel hop could it be band-aided by welding and installing OTTP's mounts?

That should prevent fluid leaking and keep the weld sealed preventing further damage, correct?

eh cast aluminum doesn't really weld well. It could be a hint at other trans problems though.

Yeah, there are a ton of great aluminum welders in this area. I'm definitely going to get it looked at though.

Any ideas of where that snap ring was before it made its way to the plug magnet?

Wait, isn't the drivetrain warrenty on the new Cobalts good for 100,000 miles? I thought it was and I KNOW for a fact you can't be out of mileage and the year should be ok so why can't you take it to the nearest Chevy dealership?

Seriously man get out your owners manual, look for the drivetrain warrenty supliment paperwork and call GM. The worst they can say is no, the best is that they fix it free. You have nothing to lose except a phone call.

bought it used, not from a GM dealer

it now has 54k on it and its an 06

I'm going to call GM today, but I suspect if I even do still have warranty left that its going to be written off as abuse, its worth a shot though.

Just cause you bought it from someone other then GM doesn't mean your warrenty is gone. Warrenies are time and mileage based, not from whom you bought it. I'd call, like you said its worth a shot.

Hell yeah, called them, powertrain through 2011.

Going to a local shop to see if they can work through warranty next week. Gonna try to get an intercooler pump thrown into the mix too.

Quick question, can I get warranty repairs done by an outside shop and not a dealer?

There is a very reputable shop about .2mi from me and my local dealer is filled with a bunch of old-schoolers that would rather build a carb or guess on something than use the computer, they suck with late models. Also, I'd rather the outside shop see it if the housing is cracked from wheel hop, less likely to be flagged for abuse, correct?

i doubt gm will warrenty it, although you can try. as for having the case welded, its possible however the piece you are holding that looks like a snap ring looks like its the snap ring that holds the dogs in place in one of the gear hubs, and thats likley why you have a 2nd gear downshift grind.

So.......maybe if I take it to the clueless guys at the local, tell them I accidentally grabbed 2nd instead of 4th when making an emergency stop (true story, not what caused the failure though)......then they'll go with that.

there is a gm service bullitin saying that if the tranny case is cracked its due to wheel hop and that they cant put through any claims for a cracked tranny case. even if you grabbed 2nd instead of 4th (that would actualy just over-rev the engine) and it caused the tranny to break, its driver error and still not under warrenty it.

not trying to be an ass, just telling you what your up against. like i said, you can try it but i doubt itll work. also if they pull the tranny out to inspect it with the intent itll be under warrenty, be prepared to have to pay 4 hours labor if they deny you warrenty and you tow it to another shop.

damn...I thought the only TSB for the trans was 3rd/4th whine (which I have) that calls for replacement of the output shaft

I'm going to call and ask.

Maybe the case isn't cracked and its something else?

I'm going to go take a look now that its nice out.

I go to the dealer on Wednesday morning.

I talked to the only other guy I know here with an SC and he said this dealer was so nice (and possibly clueless) that they replaced his clutch under warranty when he beat it to death.

Its looking good for me, I looked around and still couldn't find the crack, I noticed that I could see the clutch and flywheel from the back, I didn't think they were supposed to be exposed, but then again I'm a manual nub. Stuck my finger in there with them and couldn't feel anything, not even any fluid.

I suspect that my output shaft is failing also, as I have all the symptoms in the TSB for it.

shes at the local dealer now

I assume its under warranty, they told me they would check on everything and give me a call if it wasn't going to be covered, my buddy just saw them taking it down the road, so I assume its going to go through

warranties are contracts, usually to the original owner. sometimes they aren't transferable.
