Shifter Adjustment

So my 2nd gear grinds almost every time now when i downshift and my reverse is very hard to get in to, i also noticed when the shifter is in neutral it has a lot of play up and down (3-4) without going into the gear. My guess is i need to adjust the shifter linkage, does that sound right? I searched Shifter Adjustment on here and came accross a how to by uncliping the right clip that connects to the cable and the shifter will move freely and u can use a level to make sure it is straight. What are you actually using the level on. I am confused on how to know where to adjust the shifter too before clipping it back down on the cable.

I put a level on the clip that snaps onto the linkage.

Just take a flat-head screw driver and pry it towards the front of the car.. It's one of those "I feel like I'm about to break this ****" type of things. You won't.
