Shifter Cable Adjustment
Shifter Cable Adjustment
OK, I've searched this and still slightly confused. Since brand new, my car has always felt like 2,4,and R have felt very vague and not as solid as 1,3 and 5. Well, now it's gotten to the point where the gears at the bottom of the gate are hard to get into, have popped out or ground when shifting. I assume, its a linkage/adjustment issue. My first attempt was to try to adjust how the shifter sits. So, as someone on here suggested, I put the car in 1st, unclipped the right cable and moved the lever closer to the dash about an inch, then snapped clip back. I like the throw better now, as my elbow doesnt hit the seat bolster when i shift to the bottom of the gate but it didn't change the 'feel' of the gear. Still feels like they aren't going all the way in. Now how do I fix that? Is it the left cable? Or is there something else I adjust with the right cable? I thought the left cable had something to do with the left-to-right adjustment of the shifter, but I could be wrong. Thanks
The cable on the left side controls the side to side movement of the shifter. You can try to adjust it the same way as the right cable. It can take some trial and error before you find the correct setting.

i dont really have an issue with side-to-side. All of the gears at the bottom of the gate just dont feel like they are engaging completely. as i said, i adjust the right cable. basically, all it did was move the shifter angle forward, which was fine but it didnt change the feel of the gear. they still feel like they are barely engaging. is there something else i am missing?
well i adjusted what i could and nothing seemed to work. the car is at the dealer and they are saying that i need new cables. i find that odd, considering my car doesnt get shifted much at all, i drive all highway. ironiclly enough cables are not part of the drivetrain warranty and my base warranty is up. so i guess if it fixes the problem then i cant complain too much. still $360 i have to spend (running total) up front and who knows if that really is the problem. are the cables known to stretch / go out on these cars? i would assume something else would have to cause them to bind or something for them to just be defective, especially when my car is highway driven, as i said
