Shifter Cables Adjustment - Left Cable?

Search revealed a method where the shifter must point straight up when in neutral; others have only discussed adjusting the right clip.

Are there any merits for dialing-in the left cable as well? If so, tips/ guidelines would be appreciated.

Issue: Third locks me out sometimes under easy city driving.

If the left cable is adj. to far you won't be able to select 5th or reverse, if this is the case it will make 1st and 3rd hard so a basic guide line for the adj is to make sure you can grab 5th and reverse.

The left cable controls the side to side movement of the shifter. You can adjust it with the same method as you would with the right cable. Most people who have trouble with the 5th gear and reverse will see great improvement by adjusting this cable, you might want to check that yourself. Any other gears are harder to engage or only 3rd?

I find that 5th takes quite a bit of force to get into (by comparison to the rest), and reverse can be a bit stubborn as well (seems like a common issue, resolved by either going to 1st/ 4th and back again).

So for the actual adjustment process, is it simply trial and error?

TY for the replies thus far.

If the 5th gear and reverse are causing trouble, you will want to unclip the cable and move the shifter to the right. Then clip it back and test how it goes. It's somehow a trial and error process until you find the perfect adjustment!
