Shifting Habits

I just got done reading the sueing GM for clutch issues. My post here is to see who actually shifts what way.

I drive a Cement Mixer truck for work pretty much a big rig with a liquid load 6 foot off the ground

anyways, who here actually shift properly?

I have taken classes to learn to drive a big truck. They taught us 2 ways to shift to make a company and thier mecanics happy

1. DOUBLE CLUTCHING (clutch in to bring it out of gear then clutch out, clutch in to put into gear clutch out)
2. SLIP SHIFTING ( only use the clutch to start and stop, use RPM's of the motor to get the gears you want)

I slip shift all day long! Its a little harder to do in a car with sycros but it can be done! I am not saying that Slip shifting is the way to shift your car. I would recomend shifting normaly and gently when you drive around town. However when you RACE try to DOUBLE CLUTCH. It will actually give you better times. Practice it as much as you can if you dont know how to do it when driving around town and when you think you have it down then take a wild 1/4 mile run both ways and see what you think you like better. I would just mark off a 1/4 mile on some back road!!

Just my 02 cents!!!!!!!!!

I clutch in, shift out of gear, into the next, clutch out... That's really the easiest way to do it.

Slip shifting will destroy the syncros.

Yea i was saying it can be done! lol but in a BIG TRUCK you have no sycros so thats why us truckers drive like that cause we can and if you have ever had to push a big truck clutch pedal you know what i am sayin with it being easier with slip shifting

Cool some one else that drives a big truck. I drive a tandem axle gravel truck.
8LL, some times an 6 speed Alison automatic.

Never head the term slip shifting but thats what I do. Double cluthcing is just stupid---its all about timing anyhow. You still have to rev match. So why get a sore left leg?

As for drag racing and double clutching I just can't see it. Synchronized trans, what the point? And it seems like you'd be off the gas for longer, slowing the car down.

I have shifted a car without the clutch but its not easy--and I am not too good at it.
