how do you tell if you need to replace the throw out bearing

What is the throw out bearing? Someone please explain what it does and where it is located.

Usually they make noise or squeal, sometimes only at certain places as you let the clutch pedal in or out. If they're really bad you can sometimes feel some roughness or vibration in the pedal.
Do you think yours is bad??

EDIT; You should always replace it when you put in a new clutch, no matter the mileage. It is a cheap part but can cost big $$$ to get it changed.

well when my car was together, i remember a scraping sound when the clutch was engaged. do you know how to remove and install a new one? i cant figure out how to get it off the fork...

here is the throw out bearing, circled in red:

Sorry, never changed one on a cobalt. I'm sure someone here will help, or you can check the service manual.

You have to replace the whole assembly, there's no way to replace just the bearing. So order a slave cylinder/throwout bearing assembly.

oh god. what a pita. so im guessing its expensive. and hard to install. and probably have to bleed the entire system after adding some fluid, right??
