Tranny and clutch tips

Hey guys I'm pretty new to this forum and I just got a cobalt ss sc. This is my first manual car in my possession. I have learned previously on a scion tc. I wanted some tips for first gear (rolling start) and second gear as I experience a bit of a hop in both of them. I know for a fact that this isn't good on the tranny. Any tips guys?

Welcome....

1st gear sucks on these cars. There is a lot you can do however.

This would be a good start...

ZZPerformance - Billet Engine Mount #ZZ-BLTENMNT

ZZPerformance - Rotated Front Trans Mount #ZZ-RTMNT-FNT

ZZPerformance - Rotated Rear Trans Mount #ZZ-RTMNT-REAR

now is it bad for the transmission when it hops in first or second? is there any way to help minimize it or will it always happen? thanks for your response man!

Need more information. What exactly is happening? I'm new to the LNF (aware you have the SC), but definitely not new to manual transmissions.
You shouldn't have to takeoff from 1st higher than around 1,000-1,200 or so rpm. I was reading another thread where the norm was 2,000 rpm o.0! That's definitely slipping the clutch, which isn't good of course. You'll get used to it. Just take it easy. These transmissions are kind of noisy, too.

1st just takes practice. its all in finessing the throttle correctly. try easing on and off the gas through the first few gears to keep the tranny from bouncing you all over the place. parking lots are definately a pain in the ass but you'll get used to it and now i never get that bouncy first gear effect

yeah i take off from 1st around 1000-1500rpms and ill try easing the clutch more and see what happens. I just dont want to have any damage to my transmission! and yes parking lots are awful i am a college student and parking around here sucks on campus.

Yes it is bad. Tell Santa you want mounts for Christmas. Then you can beat the **** out of your tires instead.

My SC hopped like Bugs-Bunny on Justin Bieber until I got mounts. Another option would be to go easier on the throttle but what fun is that?

I might have santa drop off some mounts then if all of the SC's do this, I rather eat through tires then transmissions. but easier on the throttle will be the opposite reason why i got it in the first place

You'd rather eat clutches than transmissions, too.

hopping will break stuff quick. just gotta take it easy and eventually youll get used to it. the clutches in cobalts seem to feel different than other cars ive driven. pedel feels so much lighter. if i drove my srt4 for a few days id look like a newb driving the cobalt again for a few hours.

i read through a forum posted a while back, and the guy said he had solved the clutch issue with our cars. I didnt believe it at first, but after trying it myself i became a true believer in his tactic. in lower gears it is necessary to shift at higher rpm's, in order to engage the clutch properly. I will always shift at 3000rps's when in 1st-4th gear. you will be amazed at how easy the shifting becomes after trying this trick. Hope this helps!

dont try to launch on summer tires in december. they get HORRIBLE wheel hop. It will be drastically reduced with winter or even all season tires.
