tranny failure with 500+hp big turbo cobalt..what can we do?
Hello cobalt owners! We push a bit the little cobalt and the tranny is gone.
What are the options in 2017 for a tranny rebuild? We checked a brand new f35 but we are afraid of break it too... did not open the old tranny for the moment but seems to be differential failure or a gear.
We run a borgwarner s257sxe at 30psi, stage 2 cams, ported head and alot more so I need to know what can be done with my f35 (rebuilt kits, heavy duty kits, stage kits...) i know that ZZP doesnt sell f35 kit anymore and I doesnt plan to swap f40 cause they are hard to find and $$$$
there isnt a lot you can do. one member here was working on some mods to strengthen the case and properly align 3rd gear. aside from that, the 4.45 final drive helps reduce stress on 3rd gear (the most frequent failure in these transmissions).
For the moments if the engine is running in neutral position it makes noise in tranny and if we stop the engine and push the car in the garage in neutral position it randmoly blocks
I can't remember his name but it's something about lnfwagonss, like mentioned above you can work something out with him or do a 4.45 gear swap. Or do a f40 swap from zzp but you will need to source a f40 transmission first

This^ on here he is lnfwagonSS. He does some special bracing and gear treatment and he should be the best at building a trans for strength but plan on paying 3-3,500. Or like others have said you can build a 4.45, but I still think a 4.05-4.45 with the options Jason is doing, should be the strongest. The factory 3.82 lnf is the weakest due to more gear loading with the higher ratio.
I've ran a fully cryo treated Powell built F35 with 4.45 gears for 3 years now and it's been working well for me.
My car doesn't see a lot of miles but they have all been ***** to the wall road track miles.
My transmission was just taken completely apart and checked by Powell and everything looked "great".

what you need to look into the stresses you are enduring. drag strip and road racing omit a totally difference stress.

Long story and I will explane as good as I can (Im french)
No drag for us but alot of highway WOT accels 60mph to 100mph... anyway this is how the tranny failed.
But I have to say that the previous owners run it at 400hp on a dragway every weekend and was avery poor driver and very poor mecanician.. He put a s256et on that cobalt with the k04 oil fitting so you know why I've got a brand new s257sxe
He forgot to put the plastic bloc to oil the timing chain so the chain broke when the car turns in my hands few weeks later.. I've put a ported head cams and spring valve with a new timing chain.
Few miles after.. burned all crank bearing (this confirm the previous owner neglected that car)
Put a brand new Gen3 block with no sleave
Now the cobalt runs with sinto racing anti friction amazingly well but the trans gone.. so with alot of money in the engine we cannot move back and have to do a good job
If your doing alot of highway I would go for a f40 trans but that's just me. That's why I choose to go with f40 i still wanted lower rpm's when I'm cruising around

Nope, they are the only ones making it. Powell does good work and he is in Canada already so you don't have to pay the high exchange rate. 4.45 gears are short, I have one now. Here is a table for you to get an idea.

I wouldn't call it overpriced - there's a lot of custom stuff and time invested in the kit:
Upgraded steel shift cables
6 speed shifter assembly w/adapter bracket and shift knob/boot.
ZZP CV Axle shaft assembly ZZP Billet aluminum transmission brackets (Top and Rear)
ZZP Intermediate "jack" shaft w/custom speed sensor tone ring ZZP Billet speed sensor bracket ZZP Speed sensor extension harness Cast transmission bracket Solid shift cable bracket (Replaces Saab dampened bracket)
Dual Mass Flywheel
Pressure plate/Organic disc

Although the flywheel+clutch are sold by ZZP for cheap, they're not cheap items either.
By the time you add it all up, it makes more sense to go this route and end up with a better gear ratio spread than dumping a bunch of $$$ into an F35 IMO.

Get ahold of Powell. There is only about 3 or 4 people TOTAL between the US and Canada that have enough experience to properly execute even a simple rebuild on the F35 let alone a performance build and you have one of the best up there in Canada.(Powell)
Thanks for the recommendations guys but I'm in the US and the exchange rate simply isn't worth it. And fwiw, I agree with viperoni, the F40 kit is definitely worth 2k imo. That would be about 2500 CAD though

yes I know this is not overpriced if we check all the parts.. i would say its pricy because you already have aftermarket clutch and flywheel and you know the song and with the 6 speed you have to pay again 2000$ to replace this parts

Agreed, I'm hoarding a GMPP clutch and new OEM flywheel.... they'd be relatively easy to sell... but the $2k USD is still a tough pill to swallow in one shot.
Especially for an LSJ though, the upgrade should be a big help in keeping the engine in it's powerband.
cheap fast, f23 swap (gearing isn't really ideal for a s/c car, but turbo cars love em)
still rocking a stock f35 in my car, (198k miles) 600-700whp (boost or with nitrous) I just keep destroying clutches.
its a stock 07 non lsd trans, and yeah somewhere around 198k not easy miles on it over the last 10 years it's been in the car.
run that and cheap napa axles lol. no idea how it stays together, and I do pulls in the car all the time, even ran a few events with it last summer. still going strong knock on wood. I think once I get a clutch that doesn't slip though, it might be game over, especially when I can do a full pull on nitrous.
stock 198k mile head with springs and used blower cams, built bottom end with press in sleeves.
ottp s256 turbo kit on 32.5 psi and a 70 shot of nitrous for the hell of it.
car stays on 32.5lbs as a daily driver too, just don't spray the nitrous alot on the street
