Trans/axle failure
Trans/axle failure
So I check the system this morning for any new bulletins, and this is what I find. Gotta love GM's sense of urgency to fix a major reliability issue. 2008. Great.

Subject: Transmission fluid Leak Slipping Clutch Or Broken Axle Shaft - keywords crack housing shift slip #PIP3932 - (09/29/2006)
Models: 2005-2007 Chevrolet Cobalt SS
2004-2007 Saturn Ion Redline
Equipped with a 5-Speed Manual Transmission (RPO MU3)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.
Condition/Concern:
Some customers have commented about transmission oil in the clutch housing, slipping clutches or broken axle shafts on this model. An analysis of several of these failures has revealed that the problem is due to excessive front wheel hop during WOT acceleration events.
Excessive wheel hop transmits a torsional shock load into the transmission case. This causes the case to crack and transmission fluid to leak into the clutch housing. See photos below.
Recommendation/Instructions:
Stiffer axle shafts and hardware will change the system harmonics and help prevent wheel hop. These planned changes will not be available until the 2008 model year.
Note:: Be advised that failures of this nature are abuse. They are NOT defects in materials or workmanship for which General Motors would be responsible and should not be covered under the terms of the new vehicle warranty. Vehicles with this complaint should be inspected by the dealer and Area Vehicle Manager. A product report should be submitted on each.
Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.
GM bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, NOT a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform these technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions, and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, DO NOT assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See your GM dealer for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.

I know quite a few people going through this right now... and by the way my axle's blew with absolutly no wheel hop... and my friends tranny blew with no wheel hop either...
****** GM
****** GM
Unfortunatly each vehicle no matter what make is going to have it's weak points. Just sucks that GM has a bad habit of waiting till it's too late to fix the issues. The motor is just about bullit proof, so it's just right that the axles would be the problem child, and of course the clutches
umm the motor isn't bullet proof either (well pistons at least) got two over here that I know of that looks like the popped pistons friday night (temp dropped to 47 and ran lean I think)
My question is how bad do you people think these axles are. Mine as of now is holding up fine.
the main reason is because I dont really push my car that hard. I know sometimes I do but thats not all the time. I also dont have any extreme upgrades as of yet. My only upgrade is an injen intake. What I plan on getting is the CA Stg3. If I have enough money left over I will be looking into a full exhaust as well. My question is would my axle still hold up after all of this, or should i not get the exhaust untill I change over the transmission?

i am going through this bull **** right now. i have horrible wheel hop and slipping on my 1 2 shift. no mods on it at all. there pretty much saying you have all this horsepower but your not aloud to use it.
if it is not workmanship, then why would they be changing this for the 2008 models.Gm say there warrenty claims are down, thats only because they may be learning to cover up their mistakes a little better
buy some tranny motor mounts and traction bars go up in there and say um my **** is fucked they be like its because of wheel hop! then you go no
**** i replaced my mounts and have traction bars i have NO wheelp hop what so ever and you better fix my car or im buying a suzuki
