One of these SOBs? More Information for NATIONAL A4

I have a similar issue as the Op, is this a pain in the ass to swap out? Just trying to gauge labor cost
Would rather swap a 5 dollar part then 300-400 dollar clutch

Hey op did you ever figure out the culprit? Was it the tob or isb? I have the same noise. A slight faint whirring noise in neutral and the second I push in the clutch the sound goes away. I have a gmpp clutch and new thow out bearing sitting in my garage so hopefully when I change my clutch in the spring the noise will be gone. But if it was the isb I might as well get that fixed when I'm changing out my clutch and tob.

same issue here, although not when in neutral.

when i press on the clutch say 1 to 25% it makes a weird sound, sounds like what you are describing. almsot like a whirling or wind passing through a small passage. this is while the car is not moving. when i depress and i get back under that 25% threshold it makes the same noise and i can control it.

thoughts?

Rather than starting a new thread I found this through searching.

I have the same concern just noticed it louder this morning.

-Whirring noise at idle, goes away when clutch pushed in.
-Noticeable whirring in gears 1-2 other than that exhaust is too loud to tell ONLY when on accel, soon as I let off gas and coast there is no noise.
New GMPP clutch/tob, non LSD trans from Jeff Neiland.

So I have 2 questions:

1- Is there any way to tell a time frame here? I mean it should I just keep driving it at this point? Im not going to replace it so if I feel or can tell its really going im going to ditch the car (trade it in or put it in the trees)

2- Would stage 3 rotated Mounts and poly Upper mount play into this noise? Meaning would those increase the noise if it was only barely audible and within spec? Now to a level that's noticeable?

yeah I never ever had a problem with it.

During my research I found it was a bad input shaft bearing? or an input shaft bearing that was going out

However it never ever got worse.

Mine just started doing it a couple weeks ago, and I swapped for a whole new GMPP kit on my LNF back in July. However my mechanic did say the clutch was a bit loose in the transmission. Some holes around the clutch are bigger than those in the transmission, creating a little bit of play. It's probably the input shaft going bad though, as the issue started just recently. Seems most you guys still run it after a year and no worries yet, the sound is bearable. There doesn't seem to be any loss in performance as well.
