ZZP Trans Installed

Well we got the ZZP 4.45 LSD trans installed. Im gettin too old for this ****. Cant jump on it because Spec wants me to break in the clutch a least 500 miles. I set the ZZP rod at its shortest point while I break the clutch in. I still have to put the inner fenders back on and tidy up things a bit. Working on that air splitter next.

Took it out for a short ride. Shifts silky smooth. Can creep around in 2nd gear

Are you the first person other than ZZP to have this trans in their car? Also spec isn't bad from what I've heard.

i spun the pucks completely off the disc doing a second gear pull...of course spec said it was my fault which it clearly wasnt. Clutch had about 1000 miles on it..broken in at least 500 cause i did my complete motor build and turbo kit at the same time. The member brags also had bad luck and his clutch gave out on him and yet again spec said it was his fault even though perfromance autowerks did his entire build. Spec gave me all kinds of attitude when i talked to them so i would NEVER reccommend or sure as hell never buy another spec clutch

As soon as they offered the trans I shipped one of my G85 cores and my Cyroed 4.45 gearset to them so Im probably one of the first with the 4.45 LSD Trans.

Nothing wrong with a spec if it's installed propelry and driven right. The ZZP/Southbend clutches are great, but there's no reason to knock the Spec options, they have been one of the best so far.

i was thinking about it but it is a wear item so they could say i just burned the disc up myself even though thats not the case at all...i did a second gear pull and didnt even shift third and the clutch was gone...the rivets in the disc actually got pulled out on 3 of the pucks causing the clutch to fail

That sounds like a mis-alignment issue or a pressure plate that wasn't fully engaged, allowing the disc to chatter until it broke the rivets.

Read the warranty section on Exedy's website, it's very accurate. Probably 95% of clutch problems are due to installer error or other mechanical problems that were present before or caused during the installation. I've seen major shops **** up a fairly simple clutch job either because of sloppy work, lack of concern, or a simple mistake. It can happen to anyone.

i understand what you mean but it was installed correctly i assure you...my dad and uncle have done their fair share of work to know how to do a clutch. Both have drag cars over 1000hp and both have done 50+ clutch and tranny jobs. Ive also done 4 clutches in cars myself including a 2 that were in 500+ whp cars so i know how to do one also. all 3 of us were there when i put in it so it was def done correctly with an alighment tool and all. The pucks just fell off the disc which none of u have ever seen before so idk wat happened.

any reason you set the zzp rod so tight to break it in?

Actually I set it loose (shorter) because I dont trust GMs FN Throw out bearing, ie slave cylinder. If you set it too long slave. After the clutch is broke in I can lengthen it as neccessary

How many of all those high hp car and drag cars were FWD?

I love when people say that, oh I built a (yadda yadda yadda race car) so I know what i'm doing...

I've built my share of engines, from 4 cyl cars to huge marine diesels, and i'm the first one to admit that there is always something new to learn. Don't assume becasue you worked on some types of cars you know how to work on all cars.

Yes it is always possible that something failed in the clutch due to poor material quality or whatever, i'm just saying in my experience and in the experience of most aftermarket companies, the installer is usually to blame.
