adding an amplifier to a set of 6x9s... need help plz
Ok so i have a question....
I would like to buy a pair of 300watt 6x9s for my cobalt.... and to get some nice bass, and sound, I would like to wire em up to a small MTX amplifier....
anybody know the proper way to wire them up?

I have the INFINITY REFERENCE 9623i 6x9 3-WAY speakers....
and a MTX Thunder 282 amp that puts out about 280 watts....
Wait, Spun, scratch that setup that i just posted....
Try this.. how would i wire up these?

So it all depends on where you want the amp. Placement is key only because of the ground (or lack there of) in the Cobalt. I suggest mounting it where you cant see it, right in the spare tire well. This way your close to the batt and a good ground plus you keep a full trunk .
Using this as a mounting place you will need
3-4 feet of 8 guage power wire
18 inches of 8 guage ground wire
1 inline fuse holder
1 30-40 amp fuse ( the kind depends on what kind of holder you have but I suggest barell style for both)
2 8 guage ring terminals
1 20' pair of shielded RCA's
15 -20 feet of 14-16 guage speaker wire (20 feet may be a bit to long but better safe than sorry)
20' of remote wire (18 gauge should do)
Mounting in the spare tire well lets you have the best ground in the car, the same one your batt. is grounded to. the shorter the ground the better, use a ring terminal, to put it on the same bolt, but sand or file the paint of the metal where the bolt sits first.
Dont mount the amp directly to the metal of the car, put it on a peice of wood then mount the wood to the car, this keeps the amp grounded and safe incase of your ground ever pops loose
Take the power wire and cut 6" of of it, at one end put a ring terminal, this will be the end that will connect to the batt, at teh other end attach one end of the fuse holder put the other end of the fuse holder on the remaining piece of power wire
Run your RCA's and the remote wire down the passenger side of the car untill you hit the trunk, then directly into he spare tire well
If you run the speaker wire under the lining along the side of the car you can keep it hiden until you pop it out along the bottom of he deck lid, use zap straps to keep it tucked out of the way, and label each wire before you run them so after when you want to put them on the amp you'll know which side is which. A piece of masking tape around the end works nice, plus you can write on it
THe speakers are 4 ohm and have a 45 watt rms with a 90 watt peak.
The amp will put out 60x2 @ 4 ohms stereo
This is the best way (IMO) to run it, just connect the pos and neg to the respective sides of the amp, left speaker on the left right speaker on the right, don't bridge it, the speakers can't handle it, plus running true 4ohm stereo always sounds the best.
The speakers are 2 way and you wanted to get a little bass from them right?
In this case set the crossover to off or full range, this will allow some bass from the main part and some high end from the tweeter.
Set the gain on the amp to 2/3 to start with if you want it louder, SLOWLY ajust it from there.
I think I remembered it all, but I reseverve the right to add things if forgot them, I'm sure you'll have questions so fire away

are you talking about RMS... your not going to find a 6X9 that will handle 300w rms easily
cobalt shouldnt require adapter plates but every 6X9 is a different size (no joke)

i know no 6x9 will handle 300w rms, thats ridiculous...

The reason I said it would need an adapter is because the speakers in question are 5x7 or 6x8's or at least thats what the link said. Being an inch smaller than the stock speakers might prove them to be a pain in the ass to fit in.
The Morel, Polk Audio, Infinity, and MB Quartz, 6x9's can all handel up to 300 watts, but thats peak, the recomended power range for the Infifnity Kappa 6x9's is 150-250 with peak being 300. So Thyere are many 6x9's that can handle that kind of power, the question is can your wallet handle it.
On the other hand, The Guru is a installer, works for or owns a shop, don't know which. Point is he may be able to get you a deal.
