yes, batteries charge when the system voltage is higher than the battery, and discharge when it's lower. current and amperage come into play when you're talking about the rate of charge.

an alternator is regulated, so you can't over strain it with the battery, but in theory, if you were charging an almost dead battery <11v it would take longer for the alternator to do it.

ah okay, so basically the kinetik will be discharging until the system is higher ?

right, but that's really only an issue when the car is off, or if the draw is greater than the alternator can provide.

think of it this way, look at a police car, there are a lot of add on items that draw power, so they have HD batteries to handle that. now, most of them also have HD alts to keep the lights from dimming and all, but the idea is the same.

basiclly adding an alt is very helpful but not 100% necessary. So yes you can add a battery to your current setup and it will be fine.

to give you a good idea of an extreme situation. a SPL vehicle we had at the shop was a mazda 6 with a stock 60a alt. Battery wise it had 8 interstate workaholic tractor batteries (about twice as big as the commercial group 31's but i dont know the size off the top of my head). 8k watts of amp power RMS and it was a daily driver. Now that car never got close to 12v even driving but it worked just fine and always started. He had to bring it in to the shop every 2 weeks or so to spend all day on a battery charger because at that point the alt probably didnt even work.

Adding a battery(s) is a strain on the alt but it only makes a difference when the voltage of the car drops to the battery voltage (fully charged should be 12.8 or so) but more/better batteries have a bigger capacity making the voltage drop at that point significantly smaller. Your alt isnt going to fail do to batteries if they are kept charged. If your voltage is always at 10-11v the alt is going to die regardless and adding extra batteries and caps just speeds the process. a alt can easily charge a bank of 20 batteries from 12.5 to full capacity but will have take some time charging a single battery from 10v to 12v.... playing your amp at full tilt at that point is what kills the alt. It cant charge the battery (which its not made to do in the first place) and give your amp 100amps

Just remember an alt is meant to maintain the voltage of your batteries not charge them

right, that's why trucks can have several batteries with no issues.

off topic, emperor, did you get my PM?

don't know buddy... reason I went dual alt was one wasn't offered for the balt in 06. two years later they should have them but I don't know.

I'd recommend
ohio generator
you'll notice the ohio gen logo in my rear windows ( i lied non of the pics i have posted show it but its there)
powermaster

theres also
iraggi alternator
excessive amperage
high output alternators
mean green alternators
