I want to hook up an amp to my door and rear speakers... iv got new speakers and all but iv never done this before. do i need a 4 channel amp or is a 2 channel good enough? and how much wattage do i nead?

 

Do you have an aftermarket head unit?

Depending on the impedance of the speakers you may be able to get away with a 2 channel amp, but a 4 channel will usually be the ideal choice

 

yea need the model/brand of speakers before we can put any input. If you've never done this before get a four channel.

 

i have 240w peak power kenwood speakers and i have a 340w 4 channel boss headunit... anything else you need to kno??

 

i need to know the RMS values, don't ever go by peak :P. think of it as an imaginary number that will never exist.

 

oh haha i got ya... speakers are 70 rms and headunit is 85 i think

 

your headunit will not put out 85 watts rms per channel, or anything close to that, if it did your headunit would currently be over powering your speakers

if you wanna spend some money, and get something good, get a JL Audio Slash 300/4v2, thats the best amp for your application/ apparent skill level, it puts out 75 watts rms per channel with a speaker anywhere from 1.5 to 4 ohms no other amp i know of gives you this flexibility the msrp is $600 but you could get it for cheaper,

to recommend another amp(that would be less expensive) besides this one I would need to know the resistance of your speakers

 

I dont work with audio so this is all new to me... the impedance is 4 ohms... sensitivity is 88dB... response is 80Hz i dont see anything about resistance on the box tho

4 ohms is the resistance.

you need a 4 channel amp that does 75w x 4 @ 4 ohms

sorry to thread jack but, how many watts can the factory pioneer system take? i dont want to have to replace them in the long run but i want it a bit louder. should i get a 250w amp and wire it in a circuit with the stock amp so i have 500w? i dont know anything about wiring and sound systems so any help would be appreciated

let me put it this way:

you can't take a 12 oz glass of beer, empty it out, and fill it with 22 oz. You have to tell the bartender you need the tall boy. More beer requires more glass.

 

also since the system is 2 ohm active theres no drop in solution. you want it louder? if you swap just the speakers with 4 ohm counterparts they will get half power so it wont be louder. if you change just the amp you will not have tweeters and no one makes a 2 ohm crossover for them. You can do a sorta half and half job where you change the stock 6.5 mids amp them and leave the tweeters rears and sub off the factory.
oh and you cant amplify and amplifier. just like c4 said the stock amp makes so much power and if you add an amplifier before it its just going to make the stock amp blow up but it wont make anymore power

its really just easiest to say all stock or all after market

understandable dude, i don't know **** about performance mods......so i'd ask people that have em if I was interested :P

Honestly the easiest solution will take a while to install...

But just run new wires to all the speakers disconnect the stock speakers and just tuck them away into the new speakers boxes. Dont cut any wires just put new speakers in the old speaker locations. And just because I like being safe connect the minimum amount of wires needed to the headunit (rca's and whatever power remote and such that need connected).

Will take some time but will sound better and you will be able to easily go back to stock if needed.
